I've come to the conclusion that diesel Excursions are very gender biased when it comes to mileage.
We have a 2005 X in 4WD. Bought it new just before production ended. It really is the perfect family vehicle and the family pricing helped a lot.
We've got about 7500 miles on it now - so I expect it to get better when it breaks in. My wife drives it mostly - I only get it on weekends.
In the city, my wife gets around 13 mpg - depending on how long she idles while putting on her makeup :-) I get around 15 mpg - but then I drive it where I need to go and shut it off.
I've made no mods to it and don't plan to. Its got plenty of power just the way it is and if you divide the cost of mods by the price of fuel for the 2 or 3 mpg more you could get...well, let's just say you're not doing the mod for fuel economy's sake.

I've got a 2005 4x4 with almost 16k miles. I don't baby this truck a bit, and generally run about 70-80 mph on the open road and get around 14 mpg. In town in the winter, its worthless to check as I leave it idle quite a bit and average around 12 mpg. I have 295 tires on it, and just had the speedo recalibrated today at my local FMC shop, so I'll be curious to see how this affects mileage. From personal experience, the diesel is still more efficient than a gas engine with similiar power (ie, Ford 6.8 or GM 6.0 or 8.1).
The '02 I am driving got around 18.5 on the highway when it was stock. I installed a K&N filter in the stock box and went up to 19.1. My second mod was a 4" downpipe with a 5" exhaust and straight through muffler. It killed my mileage and felt like it lost a ton of torque on the highway. The mileage dropped to 17.5. I got an Edge with Attitude as a gift and that really brought things up to speed. My typical mileage on the highway on setting "3" is 22.4 and the power feels much better too. Oh yeah, I'm a real steady driver on the highway, running between 65-75. The only time I really get on it is when I see another fat-piped diesel!

I have 157.9K on my PSD and have averaged 15.2 mpg for this time period. Almost 5 years.

The best I have done on my Ex is 21 on the hwy running 55-60mph. Around town I average 15-16mpg. We rarly use it for towing anything with the exception of our small TT a couple times a year. Last year towing the TT we go 17.9 on the HWY. running about 60 mph average speeds. I am usually not in a race when we head out for vacation in the TT and I enjoy driving the Ex so mpg is usually pretty good. The only mods on my Ex are listed below.
That is correct 150K on orginal oil change.
The first 100K I changed full flow filter every 10K and By Pass fifter every 50K. The oil was tested every 10K alway good to go.
This next 100K and only about 1/2 into this period. I change the full flow every 10K and BY Pass every 20K and send a sample off every 20K. Still no problems
Ken

This is the one I use - Have not had any problems with them on either truck. They are nice for smoothing out the idle. Important to me when stuck in trafic.
Detailed Description
The High Pressure Oil Crossover Line connects the left and right High Pressure Oil rails together. This allows the computer(PCM) to monitor the pressure of both High Pressure Oil rails, therefore producing a much more even fuel distribution by balancing the oil pressure between the two rails. The line also acts as an accumulator, resulting in less pressure spikes in the system. The result is a smoother idle and all around better running engine.
15 is about the best you are going to see on the road above 65, 12-13 around town, 9-12 towing depending on speed and combined weight. I have had two now with over 100K miles combined and yes you might get better if you run 55, sea level, flat roads, but that is not my driving habits or experience.
The X is a heavy rig with a lot of drag, physics are against you.

My wife has daily driven the X since we bought it with 104K miles and now it's got 153K miles. On vacation towing nothing I've seen around 20 mpg's on a few occasions throughout a full tank of fuel. Every time I fill up I hit the odometer and figure miles and gallons used. There is no doubt you will get the best fuel mileage while cruising around 1850 RPM's.
This winter so far running only winter diesel it's gotten around 13-15 mpg which is better than my 211K mile 99 PSD. It's odd, my truck gets more long runs while the X is used for more in town driving and it idles more than the truck and still gets better fuel mileage.

Exactly the same gender bias in my X. My wife gets about 2mpg less City/Highway than I do. Funny thing is . . . our VW jetta has the same bias.
I don't quite understand the cause though because it seems like I drive more aggressively than she does . .I think it may be because I try not to use the brakes much and a diesel coasts a LONG LONG ways . whereas she tends to use the brakes much more aggresively than I do. Have a good one,
Dave
