fuel mileage update

Just completed my second manual fuel mileage test. In a combination of city and highway driving (55% highway at 70 mph, 45% city at 0-30 mph) my PSD Excursion traveled 456 miles on 22 gallons of diesel fuel. That calculates to 20.727 mpg. Not bad, huh!

Just about right. We are getting the same on the X. The 350 is another story. I'm guessing it is 16 something. Only has 2400 miles so there is still time to improve.

Did the mileage calculation today on the 350. Works out to a paltry 14.98 miles per gallon. The X gets 20+. Same driver, same habits, same fuel, same mods except for the dynomax. The 350 weighs close to 1000 lbs less yet gets much poorer fuel mileage. Amazing differences between these engines. Luck of the draw I guess.

Now the fuel mileage in my F150 only came up maybe 10% after brake-in. So with new Ex saying 10.3 on the overhead computer, I'm thinking - How are you all get 20mpg ?

1) Is that numper on paper or the overhead computer?
2) How many miles did it take to get that mpg ?

Mr 351C:

My number is based on the "fill up then drive then fill up and see how much fuel it takes" procedure. I divide the miles traveled by the fuel used to determine the mpg. I try to keep it under 2,000 rpms.

Two trips of 600 miles round trip the past two weekends yielded 18.2 and 18.3 on the computer (pump was 18.1 on first trip, have not fueled up on second trip) Both trips flat to slight rolling hills near sea level. Speeds running 65-70. Truck turned 2,000 miles today.

Daily driving which includes 30 minutes of light 4 wheel drive in sand along the Mississippi River appears to be 11-13.
(This duty yielded 9 mpg on the 4x4 Navigator)
Can't wait for it to break in a see those 20 mpg numbers ya'll are bragging about.

I don't understand all the high MPGs. I have 7200 on my 4x4 X and I'm only getting 12.9. The damn thing won't even turn to 13. Sure, I don't keep it under 2,000rpm, because I drive it like my other car (2000 Mustang GT), but still it should get better than 12s.

P.S. - Needless to say, cars move when they see me coming.

When I first got the X i was getting around 14 mpg, mostly highway miles avg 72mph. now with 9K miles I am getting about 18 mpg with the same driving. I did change the air filter at 7K and that bumped me up about 1.5mpg.

My friend's X is getting around 18mpg at 2K miles, his driving speed is probably closer to 50-55 on the roads he drives.

Thanks all... with still only 700 miles on the eX, filled up and did a trip the Smokey Mountains. Put over 1400 on it and got 16.95 round-trip. Yes, thats with the up/down (5000'elv) in the mountains. Oh, the eX computer now says 17.1

To Test Hwy mpg only... On the way back to Fla I filled in south GA and wanted to do a no-stop 70 mph hwy run to another fuel place in Fl, but with my son needing a pee stop on the side of I75 and then REALLy getting back on it - just to get back on the road I got still got 19.7mpg. Should go 860 miles on a fill-up.

Man, with a K&N air filter and some Amsoil I thinking... 22 hwy-mpg ! Semper-Fi
