fuel tank harpoon?

I dropped my tank last night to do the Harpoon mod (I think that what it's called) and when I reach inside to feel the vent tube it only stuck out about 1 1/2" - I thought most everyone here that has done this said they had about 4" of vent tube sticking into tank.
Anyway, I cut off what I could using the pvc cutters and cut off about 1" - so there is still about 1/2" sticking into tank.

Re: fuel tank harpoon?

Yup, that jives with what mine has. I don't think there's as much of an issue with the foaming on an X as there is on the trucks because the tanks is so DEEP. The truck tanks tend to be longer and shallower.

Regards,
Dave

Yep. I'd have told you if you'd have asked.

I used to list a "factory" harpoon in my sig. but recently dropped it because I ran out of space to add new things.

Re: fuel tank harpoon?

I was going to do this mod in my X this weekend. I have problems filling the tank up. After I get foam I can still put in approx. 5 gallons afterwards (which takes longer than the 37+ gallons preceding it). Drives me bonkers. Not that I have bad range without those last 5 gals.

I'll let you know about mine. Maybe the factory messed up and put a longer vent tube in mine. I seem to have the odd-ball X anyways. No factory sway bar, etc...

Re: fuel tank harpoon?

jschira,
I guess you'll have to abbreviate alot of those items in your signature and make some room for more - that is if you can find anything else to do to your X

To whoever else cares for an update, I went and topped off this afternoon. Now before doing this mod I could pump fast until the last 7 gallons. This afternoon I could pump fast all but the last 2 gallons. The last 2 were slow, but 2 slow is 3 times faster than 7 slow.

So there you have it.

Re: fuel tank harpoon?

VC,

Thanks for update. I'm going on your expereince that it is worth it for me to 'poon the tank this weekend.

I almost got in trouble with my wife when I told her I was doing poon tank this weekend.... I learned not to abbreviate as much when speaking to her as I guess she heard something else.

jschira,

How close to full do you get with your "factory" harpoon? Sounds like they are all a little different.

On my '04 X I get 3.5 gallons in after it shuts off. Not going to go through the trouble of dropping the tank as the range I get with 40 plus gallons is plenty. I only squeezed in the 3.5 gallons because I was curious how much room was left after reading the "poon" posts.

Re: fuel tank harpoon?

DFW62,
if you are getting to within 3.5 gallons I would NOT drop the tank for that.
Incidentally, the vent on the X tanks are not at the highest point on the tanks roof. I think if I would have been able to shave the vent tube flush to the top, I still would not be able to fast pump every last gallon because of this. On my tank the top is not a flat top. It has several small humps that rise above where the vent is located, and this will always trap a little air and slow down the last gallon or two.

You also get a lot of foam. The foam will back up the filler neck first and should shut off the pump. You will always have to let the foam settle a bit before you can fill it all the way up. With diesel fuel, I don't think that you are ever going to be able to shoot it right to the top of the filler neck like you can with gas.

I really don't know how fast I can fill mine. A little embarassing to admit, but with only 1100 miles on the X (long story), I've never filled it up. The dealer filled it up when I bought it (November 2002) and that tank last 6-9 months. I only put 3-4 gallons in at a time because mostly, the X sits and I don't want old fuel it it.

I changed the oil a couple of weeks ago simply because I had the time, and with a July 14, 2002, engine build date, that factory oil was getting a little stale.

That's why all the mods. I've got to do something with it.
