My Excursion is a 2004 6.0 diesel 4x4 Eaddie Bauer that has 44k miles.
It just started making this funny air blower or sucking sound on an 8 hour trip to Tahoe from L.A. where I live.
It seems to be coming from the dash directly under the windshield.
The sound mimicks the engine tachometer, if you floor the accelerator the funny sound spools up to match the acceleration. When you take you foot off the gas the sound stops. Like I said, the sound sounds like a fan blower on high or maybe a serious vacume sucking sound (but I do not feel any air moving above or below the dash) The sound sounds like the windshield blower, however it is not the windshield blower. There are no performance issues and I have no other issues with this truck except the steering has always oversteered?
I looked under the hood to check the firewall but I don't see anything amiss.
well anyone else; do the Excursion's have the parking brake release when the tranmission lever is moved out of the park position? I have over the years seen a lot of luxury cars where the system did not function because of vacuum leak or damaged diaphram. That could be the source of the leak.

Good; that rules that out. Lots of Cad' and Lincoln's have used that vacuum release setup since the 60's and some still do. I have never ridden in or driven an Excursion so I didn't know.
Could the sound be connected to the transmission in some way? That would help explane why it only does it in drive!
Also my engine emission dash light is coming on and off. I thought that might be related to my recent trip into the mountains.

How about a small vacuum leak in hose or servo. Does it change when the mode selector on the A/C is moved?
[/ QUOTE ]
Shouldn't be a vacuum leak, the vacuum system (at least with the 7.3L) is controlled by an electric vacuum pump. Therefore, the amount of vacuum won't change with engine speed like in a gasser.
