GAS MILEAGE.. good or bad

ive got a 02 ex limited 4x4.. with a procomp 4" lift.. running bfg 295/75/16's... ive put a 4" magnaflow exhaust from the turbo back.. ive got a afe stage 2 cold air intake.. and no chip yet.. and im running about 11.5 to 12 mpg.. this just seems low to me. ive got a friend with everything stock on a 2000 ex 4x4 with the same mods and a chip though.. he is getting around 18 or 19.. and his foot is heavier than mine.. i was going to take it in and have a diagnostic run on it.. for like $90.. the folks at four wheel parts said that the lift and tires shouldnt be affecting the mpg with the mods so far that i should be getting alot better gas mileage.. does anyone have any advice for me.. should i investigate more or be happy with what im getting.. it just seems low.. im a motor cop here in austin so i get all of my speed need out at work.. so its not a heavy foot or anything.. any help would be appreciated..

Re: GAS MILEAGE.. good or bad

In my opinion, that is alarmingly low. I would expect up to 18mpg on the freeway in your configuration. The 4x4 shop has been eating Bozo flakes for breakfast. My excursion with stock tires and suspension, no chip, 55mph on flat ground at 100* ambient air temp got 25 mpg. With my lift and fatter than yours tires and 100hp chip in the dead of winter with really lousy fuel I get 11.5 to 13.0

I seriously think you should have Jody Tipton reflash your computer for about 80 more horsepower in his economy tune.

Where your mileage is going is beyond me. Maybe the tranny is sloppy-

Do not make the tragic mistake of comparing your excursion to a pickup when it comes to mileage, towing or suspension. The EX outweighs some pickups by 1,500 pounds and that will cost you a lot in mileage. On the bright side though, when you carry around a ton of rocks in the back of your Excursion, you will KNOW that they are riding in comfort as opposed to being carelessly abandoned in the back of a pickup...

Believe me, I've done it several times.

Re: GAS MILEAGE.. good or bad

Hmmmmm....

4 wheel parts has never been a wealth of information for me...

but as you realize, your right foot is the best mpg control you have...
these are HEAVY trucks and with all due respect to clamgulch you WILL not get 25 mpg on a regular basis even outta a 7.3L (I had an 02 4x2 Ultimate so I have some exposure to it), much less a 6.0....

and on top of that, unfortunately the changes you made to it are not friendly to your mpg
lifted it giving it more frontal area,
which has probably increased your drag coefficient by a factor of 4...
put on heavier tires which give more rolling resistance and also more weight to have to turn every time you accelerate...

In my humble opinion...
a chip will never pay for itself in mpg alone....
now in fun or whatever it did in my case!
but if I were to recommend one,
I would recomend a more widely known group to get it from that has a proven track record.
but one thing chips do for certain is "fool" the overhead lie-o-meter even more
if I believed my 02's overhead I went from 17 to 22 mpg when I put my chip on.... now it really DID improve it, but not 5 MPG !!!!

How are you calculating your mpg ?
the overhead is called the lie-o-meter for a reason,
hand calculation is the best way, but STILL can be highly inaccurate since it is difficult at best to fill up to the same level each time...
3 to 5 gallons difference per fillup is not unheard of...

now realistically,
around town, 14 to 16 mpg around town is about normal...
on the hwy 17 to 19 is usual....

Did I state it was a HEAVY vehicle ?
and does not exactly "slip" thru the air

mpg should be one of the LAST reasons to get one of these beast...
but saying that, I am MORE than happy with the mpg I have gotten out of the three excursions I've had.....

Re: GAS MILEAGE.. good or bad

Someone may have already asked, but did you have the speedo recalibrated?

You're saying "gas milage" but I'm assuming (and could be wrong) that you have a diesel? If gas, that sounds about right.

Re: GAS MILEAGE.. good or bad

When is the last time you checked/changed your air and fuel filters? Those make a huge difference in fuel economy when they are clogged. I wouldn't pay for a $90 diagnostic yet, take to an auto parts store first that will pull codes for free. Maybe something easy. Also, dig around here, there is a thread about a valve in the exhaust system that gets clogged and effects fuel mileage.

What tire pressure are you running?

Re: GAS MILEAGE.. good or bad

Mine seems to be the same around 12 mpg. This doesnt change city or highway. I am kinda hard on the peddel but no matter how hard i drive in the city it never moves 12 mpg. On the highway i leave it on cruise 70 mph and the same 12 mpg but i am thinking that i am running about 77 or so and about 2200 rpm. Not sure just havent had anyone drive along side of me to check the real speed. Next time i take a trip i plan on running about 60-62 and check to see what the milage is then. It should really improve. Does anyone know the speed differnce from stock tires to the 315/75/R16 that i running now.

Re: GAS MILEAGE.. good or bad

I've got an '05 with 9600 miles and I consistantly get 12-13 in town and 15 on the interstate. I've got 4" of lift and 295 tires as well. I drive it moderate to hard, so I realize I won't get 20, but 17 or 18 would be nice...

Re: GAS MILEAGE.. good or bad

Yikes, that's pretty bad. Getting good mileage requires more than anything a change of habits which can be hard to do. Outside of that, it sounds like you might have some troubleshooting to do to find the problem.

I've got a 2001 4x4 7.3L PSD "X" with 80,000 miles on the odo. Over the last ten tankfuls, I've averaged 21.4 MPG. I commute in mixed driving 100 miles a day in the Nashville, TN area. Lots of construction and lots of stop and go driving. I use BP and Phillips 66 diesel primarily. Pilot's swill uh, er diesel did poorly in my truck, robbing me about 2.0 MPG.

Here's what I've done to maximize my mileage.

1. I keep my speed at or below 60 MPH. Otherwise I drive the speed limit. Drag goes up exponentially as you get beyond 60PMH. On a big truck there is 40% more drag at 70 MPH over 55 MPH. Big difference.

2. I drive like I have an egg under my foot. I build speed slowly and allow the truck to shift to the next gear at the lowest possible RPM. Automatics handle this, well, automatically. On manuals you have to look at your torque curve and make sure that your RPM doesn't drop below the beginning of the torque plateau. In big truck lingo this is called progressive shifting. There's lots of trucking articles on the 'net about it. Works just as well on our little trucks.

3. I anticipate traffic slowing down/stopping and adjust my speed so that I can keep it rolling. Same goes for red lights.

4. I try to consolidate the shorter trips so that I operate while the engine is at full operating temperature. A cold engine sucks down the fuel.

5. I'm running my tire pressure at 60 PSI.

6. The truck is stock with the exception of the AIH mod. Didn't seem to make any difference.

7. I won't idle for any longer than a minute or two. Doesn't do the truck any good and it wastes fuel. FedEx and UPS use the T444E in their package cars and start/shutdown a dazillion times a day. They go hundres of thousands of miles without having to replace the starter.

Driving 70 MPH over 55 MPH will only cut two minutes off your drive time over a ten mile stretch. I've learned to just give myself an extra 5 minutes of drive time on 90% of my time behind the wheel. At 60 MPH, I live in the granny lane which suites me just fine.

I'm a believer that all those intake/exhaust mods don't do a lot when you don't push your truck hard. If you tow a lot, you need the truck to move air efficently as possible through the engine. At the lower end of the power band, where I spend 90% of my time in my "X", they don't help.

Most of these tips I've used in my career as a professional truck driver.

Good luck.

With the larger tires your mileage is going to calculate lower than actual. Even if your using the "manual" method (forget the overhead computer if your "chipped"). What a lot of folks forget is that the larger tires are going to induce an error in the odometer and speedo, so even calculating by hand the numbers will be wrong. Once jumping up in tire size (you've gone up three sizes), you'll need a method to accurately display miles traveled, and that usually means a GPS device or something similar that does not rely on any inputs from the vehicle.
I only upgraded tires to 285's, but notice the mileage took an immediate hit and could only do no better than 15 on the highway, even though I had previously been able to get at least 20mpg before the tire change/upgrade.

I already had a GPS device, so whenever I feel the need to check fuel mileage, I use the GPS to measure mileage covered (the only dead nuts on accurate way to do it), and use that number in my mileage calculations, and found out that my mileage hadn't taken a hit, but rather I was still getting my usual 20-21 on the highway, and just over 16.5 in town.
