Gear Ratio Change

I use my X for some town driving, but mostly for pulling my 30' travel trailer which weighs in around 8500#. Our weekend trips are close by on mostly level ground. Our vacations are to the mountains. I feel that I could improve my towing performance by changing to 4:10 gears. Anyone done this or any thoughts???

Also, anyone have the Ford part # for the aluminum rear end cover I have read about?

Re: Gear Ratio Change

I think the biggest difference would be more fuel burned.

What about towing performance do you want to improve?

Re: Gear Ratio Change

Towing is good on the flat but in the mountains it needs help. Towed 11% grade 2.5 miles up this summer and I was slow at the top. Steep grades just really pull it down and I think 4:10 would greatly improve towing. I do not drive it much except for towing.

Re: Gear Ratio Change

i like momentum if you can hit the hill 10 to 20 mph faster then he speed limit just watch for cops. you will just need to drive the hill normaly but a bit faster and it should be fine if your trouble is at the top of the hill

and this works great in mountains let off the brake on downhill and try to accelerate uphill( with respect to your motor) nad you should be fine
i do it all the time not loaded just for fun

Re: Gear Ratio Change

I too drive like you 88beast when possible. But we go to out of the way places and the only roads are narrow 2 lane that wind and twist. No room to get running start

I wouldn't do it myself, & I understand why you are looking at it. I'd do the Torque Convertor lock up mod. This way you can lock the TC in first gear, or second gear while towing. That will aid in mountain towing greatly.

Re: Gear Ratio Change

Changed mine to 4:10 dropped 2 MPG in the city, probably a bad move for me since I do not tow much at all. For towing I think it would be a good move. The gears and install, $1000+ I would have been better off to stay stock, since I don't tow. jh
