My apologies to all you gassers out there but it really chaps my hide when I keep hearing about how bad the gas mileage is with our big buggies. Pound for pound, the diesel Ex cannot be matched for efficiency....IMHO.

Re: Gee Whiz Ford . . . Get With the Program. Keep the X!

Let 'em dump the X if they are that foolish, I will enjoy passing a Suburban or Expedition crowded to the roof with a family of six, all of their luggage stowed on top, getting soaking wet, getting 12-14 mpg, (if they are lucky) in my 03 6.0 X, very comfortable with all six of us, sitting in FULL SIZE seats instead of those "FAKE" third row seats, the luggage stowed neatly in the back compartment, all safe and dry, and getting 20-22 mpg, hows that for resale value? Oh I forgot to mention the kids are quiet because they are all into some stupid movie playing on the DVD system..... Oh one more thought, if both the Suburban and the Expedition broke down at the same time, me being the family man that I am, would kindly stop and hook them up behind my X and tow them both (at the same time) to safety, and still get better mileage than they were gettin....... I would like to see a road test in Trailer Life with the new 6.0 Excursion vs the 8.1 Suburban towing a large travel trailer. Maybe Ford would see it has the worlds best SUV for towing large TT's.

"People will say down the road,I've never seen that Ford truck before"

This is similar to the old Ford Centurion that was build in the late 1980's and early 1990's (~2000 of them built). I still see a few of them on the road or in the classified ads. Some of them had the 7.5L 460 and a few have the 7.3L Diesel.

Um, no, that was where Centurion (an aftermarket outfitter) took F350 crewcabs and built them into "Ford Suburbans" of a sort... because there was a demand for such a vehicle and Ford wasn't building it. It priced out about $10,000 higher than an equivalent Suburban at the time, which is why they didn't sell so many of them.

It is truly said that Ford *finally* enters that market with a real factory model, then abandons it again after a few years. Maybe Centurion will start doing those conversions again!

Hey Frobozz,

Guess you missed my point. I was not trying to compare the Centurion with the X. According to one of the Centurion clubs they say Ford had a contract with Centurion to build them for Ford. But I am not positive.

Anyway, I was just remembering when I first saw the Centurion I thought to myself..."I never seen that Ford Truck before". The same thing the author of the original post said would happen to the X in a few years.

Re: Gee Whiz Ford . . . Get With the Program. Keep the X!

Yes I wish Ford would wake up and realize that people are just starting to look more into the x. Ford's biggest problem is they put that v10 as a standard motor and it gave a bad name for the x. Never have I seen any comparisions of a diesel against any other gas and they also compare a ride of 1/2 ton sub to the x. I think Ford also needs to look at pages like these to see what people do to improve the x's.
My wife and I test drove an x and sub in 2000. We hated the x. When finances were better in 2002 it was finally time to decide so we went to a dealer and tried an x out we were surprised. Then we went right to a chevy dealer and found a big block 3/4 chevy and no difference in ride and power to speak of. SO we bought an x for the milage and like my wife said "she feels safer in the x".
The dealers said the x's sold Ok but Ford just put to many on the market right away. Ford needs to realize Chevy has been building the sub for a long time and they are not going to take the maket over in 5 years. Look how long it took Ford to take over the pickup market.

Re: Gee Whiz Ford . . . Get With the Program. Keep the X!

I test drove a 3/4 ton Suburban with the 8.1L gasser. I didn't think that at speed, it was any quieter, and I have the noisy 7.3! Even during acelleration, the Suburban really wasn't that much quieter than my X.

Gas hog engine, smaller gas tank, pathetic TT mirrors. On test drive is all that I needed to dismiss the Chevy.

Hey, these Excursions are going to be like 76 Caddy Eldo Rag tops. I sort of like driving what will become a collectors item. But then I'm a little strange from time to time.

Yes, but you had to wait 27 years for the '76 Caddy to be worth more than you paid for it!

Re: Gee Whiz Ford . . . Get With the Program. Keep the X!

Actually the rag top eldos (76 only) held value for a long time, then eventually dropped off but are coming back again. I think the 6.0 Excursions will be sort of a collectors item. Theya re going to make it for a year and a half? If the 6.0 with the 5 speed tranny is a home run it might be a value holding truck. Actually I like it any way and really don't care but it would be sort of cool if they became like VW bugs or something. Drove from Central Florida to Key West last week end, 500 miles one drive. Plenty of fuel left and real smooth and quiet.

Re: Gee Whiz Ford . . . Get With the Program. Keep the X!

I am SO glad I got one while I could. Even before I knew they were going to drop it I planned on keeping mine for ten years. Since it will certainly be a collector's item, might keep it longer....
