Got Engine Problems. - Diesel Forum

Monday of this week Ford replaced water pump. I had setup an appointment to get it checked out due to the fact I had lost about 8 mpg after the pump replacement and I have a whirring noise since replacement. All the intercooler hoses are hooked up. Well it is a good thing that I have an appointment because I just got back to the house and I am blowing gobbs and gobbs of white smoke out of the tail pipes. No mosquitoes following this dude. It does not have the anti-freeze smell and the level is not down in the degas bottle. Also oil level is right at the full mark and clean. It has a diesel smell. I hope it is "O" rings on the injectors or something simple like that. Wonder what I am going to get to drive. Got a Tarus last time. It wasn't to bad [img]images/icons/frown.gif[/img] .
If it is major I am going to insist on a new engine. Heck I haven't got but 6,800 miles on the bugger. [img]images/icons/mad.gif[/img]

My brother has a 96 CC PSD and it has 158,000 miles and he has only replaced the GPR, belt tensioner, and one transmission. He drives it pretty hard, and it gets used for four-wheeling and everything else.

One thing about the truck, Ford mechanics never touched it. I wonder if that plays a role in how long these trucks last. It seems like if you take it in for something that gave up on you, you get it back with 10 more problems.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I hope you guys don't think I am trepassing, I plan on getting a PSD X when I recieve my ECE degree.

Well folks I ran about three quarts of oil through it going the 25miles to where my dealer is. Did not burn it. Albert the tech did not even put it on the diagnostic instrument. He pulled the boot to the inlet of the turbo and you could wiggle the impeller. Sooooo I got the Tarus in the garage [img]images/icons/frown.gif[/img] , and they will call when they get it fixed. Hope that is all that is wrong with it. I have had some other problems with the bugger, and right now I just do not fell like I can trust it.

Y'all thake care. If you are ever going down the road and you hear a whirring noise and the engine looks like old smokey Joe, It very well could be the turbo. I mean you could not see behind me, it was that bad!!! [img]images/icons/frown.gif[/img]

ON EDIT: I forgot, but the X ran smooth and without hardly any loss of power going over to the dealers, Go figure?? [img]images/icons/crazy.gif[/img]

HEDS: Not on subject, but looking at your handle, were you a stack gas snorting snipe in another life? Cliff EM2 USN(long time ago).

Got my X back this afternoon and looked at the turbo. Ford wants it back. Albert , the tech. and I agree with his diagnosis. The bearings were not coked at all. The bronze bearing and seal were shot. There was no abnormal heat discoloration. The turbine was not dammaged by ingesting anything. The bronze bearing was wallered out and more than likely took out the seal. Albert said he had never seen one go out like this and still look new. Albert said that Garret either had got some bad bearings or there was a slight turbine imbalance.

At present I really do not trust it and hope this is it for a good while.

Since I purchased it these are the mechanical items that have broken.

1) Glow plug nodule @ 100 miles.
2) IDM (Injection Driver Module) @ 2,100 miles.
3) Water pump @ 6,300 miles.
4) Turbe @ 6,500 miles.

I hope this is it for a loong time.

I have also had other minor things like Window motor, Back up alarms, and other aggraviting stuff.

Yep cliffsurfs I was an EM 3 when I got off the USS MIDWAY a CVA. I was a kiddie crusier. Sooooooo they had to pipe sunlight to me as you know [img]images/icons/laugh.gif[/img] . It wa a long time ago for me to. We made Laos patrols in in the South China Sea. Talk about hot, over 120* every day for 30 plus dayes at a time [img]images/icons/frown.gif[/img] . We would sleep on the sponsen decks because it was too hot to sleep inour racks [img]images/icons/mad.gif[/img].

HEDS: Off subject. I was on the Manatee AO 58 1968-70 cruised from An thoy to Da Nang Probably oiled ya and exchanged movies. Stayed wet for 2 years 118-25 degrees on the gen. flats X from the evaps. Still beat being in the mud. Hope your EX isn't Terminal. Bought my EX partly cuz every one on this site seem to have such great luck with them. On the GM sites every *****ed about their Sub & XL's. 'bout the time you guys are talking about, i was playing in that mud. i'd rather talk about trucks.

how is it running now, Ed? i have lost turbo bolts once and think mine whines a little more now than it did, but i am sometimes guilty of making a little more boost than i should, too. if i lose any more bolts i am gonna hammer at 'em to replace my turbo.

like these guys say, let us know if you need some help. it ain't that far from here to there.

thanks, guys. i was about to start feeling left out.

glad to hear it is better, Ed. i guess i just got lucky with my x because except for the turbo bolts and the roof rack scratching it, i haven't had too many problems, and they were minor.

i have been cutting some trees off a neighbor's fence and driving mine across pastures. it makes me feel a little strange to be doing this in such a vehicle. it is also pretty comfortable.

it's quirks aside, i really like my x. it is probably the most comfortable vehicle i have ever owned, and the PSD makes it something to be reckoned with. i laugh at the people who talk about 'soccer mommy cars'.

i know that my past is a thing that can be embarrassing. don't mention it much, but those guys gave me a few rides too. i left that place in the middle of a typhoon coming up on the uss dubuque. used to call those lsd's, but they changed the name to lpd's. going around the phillippines at thanksgiving, there was one other guy who was eating and the rest weren't. had to kind of chase the turkey and dressing as it went by.

memories. most of them best left memories, but i kind of appreciate them swabs too. and some of their pilots saved my little fanny a couple of times. as it happens, i have a stepson who is in the process of joining the marine corps. i am trying to stay quiet about this and let the boy learn on his own.

happy monday. i have to go to work.
