Got my V codes today.

Ordered from the dealer last Friday. Code # 3C34-5310-ADA Picked them up today.

Same number that everyone else is ordering. Suprised at the weight on them for just a 2 leaf. I know that I have seen the ones in the truck, but seeing them out of the truck is another suprise as to the size. I guess I'll be even more suprised by the rears.

I ordered a set of U bolts and nuts. I heard they had to be replaced per Ford instructions because of torque to yeild. Is this right? Also, do I need to replace the eyebolts?

I'll be putting them on Thursday and Friday.

Now I am in the same boat as Bruce1954. I need to figure out what to put in the rear.

There is a spring company called Triangle Spring Works just accross the Delaware river in Philadelphia. They make springs and will make custom. I called them and the guy said that he can make a set to my specifications. I'm gonna go over and talk to him tomorrow. He says he can make something that will give me a nice ride and still carry the load, and at whatever height I want and even design the rate with airbags in mind.

So, Bruce, you got any suggestions on what rates and leaves, etc.? Looks like I'll have the cash for them by April first, and I'll either buy the B codes or have the custom made.

Re: Got my V codes today.

With tax it was 143.50 each. He got for me wholesale, but the shipping killed him as tthe warehouse just threw them in with an overnight order. Who says warehouse clerks don't have a sense of humor?

Update:

I went to Triangle springs today and had a long talk with their resident engineer. It seems that he is able to do everything that I want:

Ride height 1/2" heigher than the front with V codes. I like a forward rake.

Soft ride on first stage with bags until laden with tongue weight.

2nd stage strong as a 350.

poly bushings and teflon spacers.

I took all of the info that I had, weights of truck, Expected trailer weights and lengths, Expected cargo towing and not towing, yada yada yada.

He is also going to work some numbers on the front end.

He says he will be able to get all of his calculations done by Tuesday, so I will find out then.

Expected price about $250 each.

Has anybody heard from Bruce?

Re: Got my V codes today.

Housedad,

Any word on your custom springs yet? I'm curious to hear what the "ideal" springs are for your application. Also, I would like to know what data you supplied them, so I could see how it compares to my application.

Thanks,
Rob

Re: Got my V codes today.

I've been religiously reading all the spring swap threads for a while now, just soaking in the knowledge so to speak. One tidbit of information I haven't seen yet is:

How are the springs identified?

All this talk of V codes and B codes, etc. Are there markings on the springs somewhere that correspond with these "codes"?

Re: Got my V codes today.

I just received the complete set of 4 (Vs & Bs), $601.00 for the complete set, shipping was drop ship from Ford to a brother-inlaw commercial addy. $128.40/ea for the front / $161.79/ea for the rears.

$20.00 for the u-bolts.

The dealer I ran the order through noted shipping from him via his stock would have been no less than $120.00, but he has had springs dropped shipped from Ford to cusomters before and shipping costs to him were $20.00. So I figure if I get hit with $50.00 I'm still way ahead. Also, the drop shipping took only 2 days. He ordered the springs Tuesday and one set showed up yesterday and the other today. Worked out great.

I have the PNs for my order if anybody is interested for reference.

Thanks

Re: Got my V codes today.

V front spring is part number 2C3Z-5310-HA, uses F81Z-2705-ZA U-bolt
B rear spring is part number 3C3Z-5560-CB uses F81Z-5705-BB U-bolt.

Took pics of the labeling on the springs.

Side note I measured the arch on the B @11-5/8 / 28.7cms

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Got my V codes today.

Here is what worked out after I went to the shop 3 times and discussed the issue at length.

A custom spring will cost between $400 and $500 per spring. He did work up the rates and leaves to give me the best ride and still give a 6830 load.

This means that it would have a initial rate higher than the F350 DRW. This is caused by the 1000lbs higher curb load on the rear of the Excursion as opposed to the 350.

Suprisingly, (or not) What he calculated turned out to be Damn close to the Standard B code but with a higher arch and 360/680 rates. (The secondary rate varies some depending on where we are in the argument)

He figured that with the bags, the 360 rate would allow sufficient travel to give a good ride, and the second stage would provide sufficient load carrying if the bags were not used.

Now, here is the fun part: He still needed to go for a higher arch to meet hight requirements.

Well, we bantered back and forth some, and the conclusion as far as cost and complexity was that it is cheaper by far to modify an existing spring.

So, I decided to get a set of 2004 B codes that he has from a take off, (he has several laying around) have them re-arch them 1.75" to 2" higher. With the bags, it should be good.

I'll add the Firestone 2" spacers to the airbags. (already ordered)

He can replace the second leaf to give a higher first stage if I want. I am still thinking about this. It adds to the per spring cost, and I want to keep the cost down I know - penny wise and pound foolish!!!

This will give me a little front rake. All is good.

I'll be picking the set up at the first half of April, when I have enough cash saved.

Wish me luck!!!

Re: Got my V codes today.

Way to much$$ for those springs Betts springs in CA. can make a pair for $500.00. You could also take the SD rears and add 1 or 2 of your stock leafs to get the weight rating up.

Re: Got my V codes today.

Why is the part number for Housedad's V springs different from the part # for ChrisH's V springs?
