Re: Hellwig Swaybar = Joke

Is there just one sway bar in the rear or is there another one up front as well.

Re: Hellwig Swaybar = Joke

The Same....I ended up with a ""pile"" of extra parts...

I probably have still got them somewhere, in a jar, or box...

The sway bar works very well, and would recommend to it anybody that doesn't have one on their Excursion

They all have one in the front, but not on the rear. It's rare to see someone replace the front as it's pretty stout as it is. If it doesn't have one in the rear, adding one is a huge improvement. If it does have one, upgrading to the larger 30mm Ford bar (comes on SD's) is cheap and easy thus worth it to do.

My 2003 X does not have a rear sway bar. Can I look at the shock mount to see if it needs to be replaced with a later one? What will I look for?

Can I order the hardware for an 04 X rear sway bar and get a larger 30mm Ford bar from the SD? If you, or anyone else, can confirm what I need to get I will order from the dealer after comparing prices online (minus shipping).

If it is easier to just get the Hellwig kit I am open to that but a couple of folks here are promoting the Ford OE parts.

Thanks,

David

Re: Hellwig Swaybar = Joke

David

You may not need a new mount on an 03 if it looks like the left you do not need a new one.
Take a look at Pict of 02 plate mod

You can see how the top of the plate was cut off.

I do not have a pict of the 05 but it is just like the left side of any X.

I think they relocated the E-Brake loop wire to the back side of the upper bolt of the shock mount.

If you what to go with the OE;

Order all the say bar parts for an 04 or 05X EXCEPT the bar
Order a 30MM bar for a SRW 250/350 with CAMPER Package
The parts book says 30MM because there is an 28MM also but I have never seen one.

Just as a reference the down link bars for an X are 10" for the 250 they are 14"; The ones you see on my 02 were made at 8" from the 14" ones prior to Ford comming out with them for the X.

There was a parts list here a while back.

Re: Hellwig Swaybar = Joke

I have tried several searches and get buried in stuff that has nothing to do with the rear sway bar. Either searching on this forum is different from all the others I am on or it is picking up on 'sway bar' in everyones signature.

Regardless, does anyone have a link to the part numbers for retrofitting a Ford rear sway bar onto a X?

I am going to go ahead and order a rear sway bar asap along with bilsteins. Then I will look into upgrading springs if needed.

Thanks Bruce & everyone else.

Re: Hellwig Swaybar = Joke

I checked my right shock mount and it has the huge plate like Bruce chopped on his. Bruce, did you ever find out what the thing is for?

Must have been to mount or to brace something else that could be mounted.

Regardless, I will either have to replace it or chop it. If I purchase an 04' or 05' right shock mount is it an easy bolt on? Will I need to relocate the E-brake cable mount?

Thanks,

David

Yes it is an easy bolt on and yes you will have to reloce the E-Brake loop

Not sure if the same wire loop was reused, I think not since the old one just had a small hole in it and I think the new one mounts to the shock bracket bolt, that is much larger.

Just ask your parts guy if the loop on an 02 is differnt from an 04.

Do not confuse him with any parts from an 03 as that is when the rear sway bar evoloved.

I you have to buy a new 05 loop I can look at mine and or post a pict.

No one ever knew what that huge plate was for other than the one hole for the E-brake loop of wire.

You have to remove it to cut it back when I did it there was no New-Old. So you might as well buy a new one.

NOW! be sure to post ALL the updated part numbers, AFTER they all fit one your truck.

If your dealer will give you 20% off like mines does you should come out less than the Helwig with no shipping. Just buy all the right bolts and nuts from Ford as well, I did not list those but Ford does not get you to bad on fasteners and you know they will fit.

If you have the factory bar 24MM just under an inch then
all you need is the 30MM bar it comes with the new bushings you need

Cost is about $60 with a little discount.
looks like the price may be down according to 1stFordparts

The Helwig will not fit the OE set up you have; just use the part number above.

I did a post spring-summer of 05 on this swap when I did the second time on my 05
