Help with Hellwig

OK, I installed the Bilstein Shocks, they were not to much of a hassle. The rear took about 5 minutes each, the fronts were about 25 mintues each.

Now I want to install the Hellwig Rear Sway Bar and I don't know where to start, the instructions SUCK.

I have had the X up on my lift and have looked at everything back there and it just makes no sense.

I have looked at most of the Hellwig posts and the pictures and still can't seem to make it out.

Re: Help with Hellwig

Check my pics in my sig and see if it makes any more sense. It is pretty easy once you the throw the instruction away.

Sad but very true. I have sent Hellwing many notes and have talked to them. They could offer someone on this site something to write up some install instructions. This site alone has problem been one of there best ads for Excursion sway bars.

Re: Help with Hellwig

Here's what I did.
Just thread the sway bar in place(end tabs go forward and the bar goes in front of the axle). Remove the old U-bolts(remove and replace one at a time and keep shocks compressed ). Put new U-bolts and the new plates in place. Align the outsides and bolt her up. It's about that easy. Once you put the bar in place it makes much more sense.
Pictures do help immensely especially with the end tabs!!

Re: Help with Hellwig

Thanks Guys,

Since I just installed a 10,000 pound 2-post lift in my shop I will put the X up again and see if I can figure it out. I assume I should be able to install the bar and forward hanger and then put it on the ground and attach the bar to the hanger, in the pictures it appears that the links were cut, do they need to be cut, if so, how much?

Re: Help with Hellwig

I didn't cut the links on our X as when I had the blocks put in I had to adjust the links a couple notches to prevent the bar from tapping the rear axle pumpkin.

Re: Help with Hellwig

I cut 1 hole off ea. end of ea. link so that the arm was somewhat parallel with the frame but not so much that the bar would hit the differential in a compression mode. I hope that makes sense.

Re: Help with Hellwig

I would have had difficulty installing the Hellwig without the pictures here on TDS. I used my floor jack to keep the shock brackets in position.

Re: Help with Hellwig

We did not do any cutting during the rear Hellwig installation. I guess it's up to you. Your going to love the handling when your installation is completed. How's the factory paint job on your sway bar and hardware parts? Do you find it as good as the directions? LOL

Take care!!

Actually I think it depends more if 2 or 4 wheel drive. I didn't have to cut for my 4x4, but have read from others with 2x4 having to remove a hole or two off the end links.

Re: Help with Hellwig

I think every situation is going to different and it's going to be up to the owner. JWARD has a 4x4 X and he cut one link out. See his posting two responses above my original one on this same thread; JWARD also includes links to his pics with all of his postings. Personaly I think I could have removed one myself but chose not to. I am looking at your pics and your setup looks just like mine. Nice job on your pictorial!!
