How can I control axle wrap on '04/04 X during hard acceleration?

When I put my foot into my '04/'04 X I get a driveline vibration in first gear at 2800 rpm's until it shifts into second. I am talking foot to the floor WOT acceleration. The vibration only occurs under the load of heavy acceleration and appears to be caused by the change in the angle of my rear driveshaft rear u-joint due to axle wrap. I hung my camcorder from the frame and did a few passes to verify that the pinion was moving upwards on heavy acceleration. It looks like it even goes beyond the point of being "straight" to create an angle in the other direction.

Looking at these new X's it seems obvious that Ford has had to work out vibration issues. The rear driveshaft on a 6.0 X has a large vibration damper on it that the V-10 X's do not nor do any of the SD's (PSD or gas). Also the angle of the rear u-joint on a PSD X is noticably greater than a V-10 X. Seems that this was done to start the pinion a little lower knowing it will move up due to axle wrap with the PSD.

Hope these details haven't bored anyone. My real question is:

What can I do to an '04/'04 PSD X to reduce axle wrap under heavy acceleration?

Make some trick traction bars. Chrome or aluminium. Thats the only way. I would probably stay away from the WOT jump starts, your tranny is vibrating its inerds the same as the axle. In 40,000 I have never done that.

Don't you already have those spring leafs with snubbers that extend forward and act like traction bars? If so, you might consider shimming up the snubbers so that they contact the front of the leaf springs sooner, or with more force. Dale

He should have those but since they are not attached to the frame they still twist with the axle. They should help a little and I know Traction Bars are goofy looking but they work. Give this a try, maybe it will solve the problem.

Re: How can I control axle wrap on '04/04 X during hard acceleration?

The problems with traction bars is that they are a straight line solution, that causes problems when the vehicle leans, or one side goes over a bump.

The axle housing is twisted like a swaybar, and the axle housing is not designed to have twist on it!

This particular vehicle may have an improperly manufactured rear axle, or a fault with the spring and the built-in anti-wrap leafs, or a fault in the driveshaft/u-joints. It does not seem to be a known problem with the 4x4 Excursions until they are lifted.

Your best bet is to setup a four link system on the rear end.

ExPSD, I did not think to ask if this is a high hp motor or what you are doing to cause the axle to twist. If it is stock there is a problem. I don't have any weird things happen when I fuel it.
