Re: How can I disable the reverse sensing system for extended periods of time?

I suggested to the wife when we first got the Excursion in June 2002 why don't I just unplug the beeper by the back door and she said uhhhh,no.

Re: How can I disable the reverse sensing system for extended periods of time?

To make this more automatic you could cut the power lead to the center pin on the 7 pin connector and splice in a lead that would connect to the PAM to keep it grounded (most trailers don't use the center pin of the 7 pin connector = Reverse Lights). This would mean on the trailer side either adding a wire to the center pin and grounding to the frame or jumping to the white terminal (Ground) or you could take the yellow lead from the trailer pig tail and grounding it to the frame or the white wire (Ground). Of course this still requires snipping but it would make the PAM "Off" while the trailer is conncted and then "On" again when the trailer is DIS-Connected. If your trailer has reverse lights then maybe another wire could do the trick.

Re: How can I disable the reverse sensing system for extended periods of time?

I just did this mod. It works great. I just added a switch on the rear right pillar. Doing it automatically when a trailer is hooked up would be nice also. But, I did not do this because I want to be able to disable when my motorcycle carrier is on the back also.

Beeper switch Here's a link to some pictures I made last year. I installed a switch that shuts off the speaker, and in it's place lights a small LED that I installed near the headlight switch. The LED flashes just like the speaker beeped.

Re: How can I disable the reverse sensing system for extended periods of time?

DPDT switch. the center 2 switch terminals connect to the signal output of the module, top 2 terminals go to the beeper/speaker, bottom 2 terminals go to the 12V Radio Shack LED indicator.

Re: How can I disable the reverse sensing system for extended periods of time?

I wonder if Ford was smart enough to build something into the trailer control that is now optional on the '05s

Seems pretty simple to me. The control is hooked into the PCM. When the PCM senses that a trailer is connected, the reverse sensor is disabled.

Re: How can I disable the reverse sensing system for extended periods of time?

OK Folks a little more help here. On my F350 the box and speaker are up under the passenger side kick panel. I found and disabled the speaker, but the off light does not light up on my 04. I did not pull the positive side to the speaker, but the Black/pink return line.

Now in looking at this I believe dmftoy1 suggestion to help keep the temporary ground permanent I am looking at doing this. Did anyone follow up on this. Per my 04 wiring diagrams it appears the momentary switch grounds circuit 1435 DG/VT to circuit 676 PK/OG. It appears a second switch jumped across these two wires is all that is needed. When closed it holds the ground. Any thoughts?

Re: How can I disable the reverse sensing system for extended periods of time?

Has anyone attempted what Yoda suggested? Wiring a switch to create a permanent ground?

Thanks,

Re: How can I disable the reverse sensing system for extended periods of time?

I've seen posts (and think Yoda had it done) that you can have the programming changed so that the dash switch will disable the sensors for a full key cycle (you won't have to keep hitting the button each time you shift into reverse).

My understanding is that the dealer has to hook up to the ECM to make this change and have avoided it as I do not trust them not to reflash. I have an early '04 with the quiet idle and original tow haul that I do not want to lose.

Try a search or maybe shoot a PM to Yoda.

Re: How can I disable the reverse sensing system for extended periods of time?

Correct. You don't need to do anything but visit the dealer and have it reprogrammed. Once you push it off it stays off until the next key cycle or you push it back on. I posted about it somewhere here. If I remember correctly it was in a service message from Ford So you know they only need to use their code scanner and not hook up the the mother ship. No chance of a re flash when they just use the scanner.

If I remember correctly I posted the solution in a seperate post.

OK folks in and out in two hours - actually less but I BS a lot as they did the work - they also replaced the vacuum pump for me that was a bit noisy. New dash on order due the the flaking surface

Special Service Message # 17815 - MULTIPLE VEHICLES -- PROCEDURE TO DISABLE REVERSE SENSING SYSTEM (RSS) FOR ENTIRE IGNITION CYCLE - SERVICE TIP.
To program the reverse sensing system (RSS) switch so it will disable the RSS system for the entire ignition cycle, rather than turning back on each time the transmission is put into reverse, Perform the following using the NGS service card (Green Card) Level 10 or higher

1 Select service bay functions
2 select PAM module
3 Select module option content (Hit Trigger)
4 Select Vehicle (Hit Trigger)
5 Hit trigger to highlight IGN or REV
6 Scroll to toggle between IGN or REV (Hit Trigger)
7 Select done which is soft key #8 (Programming Should Now Be Complete)

Folks this works like a champ, so if it supposedly did not for you,(LawnWatcher) they did not do something right.

Happy UN-BEEPING the bleeping RSS.

PS: NO REFLASH IS NEEDED so if they say they must it is total BS
