How effective is the chipped key?

Is the chipped key on the X really effective in preventing thefts? I wonder if an experienced thief can bypass the ignition switch and get the X started?

Truck theft here in Houston is out of hand. Don't hear much about X's however. Just wondering whether it is the key or no one in Mexico wants them?

Re: How effective is the chipped key?

well i have bought several fords with chipped keys...the ex's shouldn't be any different than the other trucks...anyways heres what i know...you have to have ford program a replacement and when they do they have to program two(not for sure why) a regular key will do nothing but turn it on and turn it over...oddly enough the keys are programed to the instrument cluster

Re: How effective is the chipped key?

You can program them yourself if you have two keys that are already programed.....at least I did it. Just followed the instructions in the owners manual.

Re: How effective is the chipped key?

A code gets set on the computer (the VSM I think) that an unprogrammed key attempted to start the truck.

Also after trying to start the truck with an unprogrammed key the truck won't start for about a minute.

Re: How effective is the chipped key?

If they want to "steal" the truck they will use a tow truck. There are ways to start the engine without the original key, but they are too skill and labor intensive for the average street criminal.

I once went on a service call for a GM SUV. The owners' father had put a Ford key in and tried to start it. The anti-theft system let the truck start and run (with the right key) for about 1/4 mile then it made the gas gauge go to empty and shut the engine down. It also made the engine crank over slowly like the battery was dead (but would not restart).

I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. It may very well have been an aftermarket system because I had never encountered anything like it before or since.

Re: How effective is the chipped key?

How does a Ford Key fit in a GM slot?

Re: How effective is the chipped key?

Not very well!! The transponder only has to be within about 1" of the receiver to send the signal.

I can only assume it was also a transponder key which tripped the aftermarket anti theft system.

I find this hard to believe..the GM system is a PKIII with a Megamos 13 chip and the Ford Pats III tranceiver works as a Motorola 4D 67 syestem so they are completly uninterchangeable and not recognible to either.
