How important is the LS option?

I have found an 05 PSD Excursion that I am thinking about buying and it has every option except the LS axle. How much of a difference will the LS axle make in the snow/rain/sand(beach)?

What might be my other choices of aftermarket limited slip units? or is it worth having the dealer install the LS.

Thanks,

Re: How important is the LS option?

Are you positive it doesn't have a limited slip rear? If so, ask them what the guy that ordered it that way is doing now, after getting fired!

In my opinion I wouldn't have it without one. Unless it's simply a grocery getter and highway cruiser.

They could swap it out for just a few $$ too......

Re: How important is the LS option?

With as heavy as an X is along with the torque of a PSD I wouldn't set foot on a beach without LS.

I agree also,

One of the reasons I ordered my last four new vehicles, to get limited slip

When the rear end on my van went out I bought an Auburn Gear Limited-Slip from drivetrain.com and had a local shop put it in. It was better and had less noise than any ford unit I have had. ford wanted $1200 to "rebuild" my rear axle. With the new limited slip and new every thing except one axle, I think I spent 7-800 on it.

They have several brands with varius features most any would have an advantage over the OE unit.

I also agree why order a 4x4 with no LS it does not make sense.

I live where we have ice often and the OE unit does OK in sand and mud and it is OK in snow but on ice it's performance is well let's just say it is "limited"

If you found your perfect truck and $213 is dealer cost for the limited slip ask the dealer for a little more discount and get an aftermarket unit for $500 or so + install. Or see it the dealer will help out on the install.

Now that you brought it up, next time I might just put the $200 OE cost toward a real limited slip, or even a pair!

Hope this helps

Bruce

Re: How important is the LS option?

Go with the ls. I have an 02 Explorer with straight axel and it scared the piss out of me when we lived in Ft. Worth. A couple of days of icy roads and trying to control my take-offs made me demand an ls on our X. Be safe. Go ls.
