How many miles are too many miles on a used V-10 X?
I'm looking to buy a used X and want to know when the real problems start for the engine/drivetrain.

Re: How many miles are too many miles on a used V-10 X?
The shop I take my Ex to has a truck in for a new reman unit at 138K. This truck is used as a tow truck around town so it gets used hard. His opinion is the V10 is not so good over 150K, but many on the Gasser boards will disagree. I have seen a couple with close to 200k on them, but most are hwy miles. So I suppose it would depend on how it was used.

My dad has had quite a few suburbans go well over 200k.....with regular service why wouldnt a v10 do the same? He now has a v10 excursion with 110k; drives like a brand new one.

Re: How many miles are too many miles on a used V-10 X?
I service a fleet of air port shuttle busses on the E series chassis some with the V10s that are approaching 200K and they have had very little problems with them. These things get the crap beat out of them and the mileage piles up quickly. Most of the V10s I service are the 02 and 03 model years. I think they screwed up when ordering them as they always ran diesels. They should of got the 7.3s back then and the V10s on the 05 busses they have now. This company usually runs the fleet to 300K to 350K and I see no problem with these V10s making it. I don't think I will see the 6.0s making it to half that mileage if that the way they run them. Some of the other fleets have well over 500K on the 7.3s with no major engine work done on them. About the worst thing we have seen on the 4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L is the spark plugs blowing out of the heads. When out of warranty we use the taper seat spark plug inserts and have had very good luck with them holding up and this system works with the heads still on the engine. The 05 6.0 busses have been very problematic for them and the other fleets I service as well.
I am not complaining about the 6.0s as it keeps me very busy fixing them.
