How many working PATS keys can I have?

How many working PATS keys can I have in my 2000 X?
I now have 2 working factory keys. Is it possible to add 1 more for a total of 3?
Thanks
Ted

Re: How many working PATS keys can I have?

I don't believe there is a limit on how many keys can be programmed. I have 4 sets myself. The only thing is that you have to have 2 working keys to program another.

No limit, I have 8. 1 in my truck ignition, one in the center consol, one in my wifes car key ring, one on my dads key ring, and 4 spares in my wifes jewelry box. All are programmed and ready for action.

Re: How many working PATS keys can I have?

As others have stated, no limit on PATS keys. For the fobs, 4 is the limit.

Re: How many working PATS keys can I have?

With the PATS system the Excursions use the maximum number of keys is 8 according to the Ford PATS Job Aid that I have. I have never seen anyone with this many keys or more so this information is only from Ford.

Yes that is correct or 7 plus a pats bypass for a remote start since it counts as one key if it is coil on the ignition, about $35 from Ford and will work with varius units. Or a pats key end in a box, (not recomended as I think this is to easy to use as a by-pass and hot wire the truck)

Just adding that your remote start by-pass must be added to the key count.

Stand corrected. I guess I should have said, no practical limit. Who needs more than eight keys anyway? (My wife. )

Bruce, please explian......I was going to have a Viper alarm installed with the remote start, but I did not like the idea of an actual key being in a little box behind my dash.
So there is another way???

Shure is! Don't have the part number gave all that paperwork with the old X

However just go to your best parts guy and ask him to look up the cost and accessories for the Ford Gold alarm system made by CODEALARM and it will list (or did) a little black box a bit bigger than an IceCube that has two coil wires comming out of it that go to a coil that goes around the lock cylinder (going on memory here) you have to remove lock cylinder (easy with a key) and the cover(s) then slide the coil wire over the lock area.

what the coil does is when acctivated emits a signal like the static chip in a pats key except it is turned on by your alarm box during starting only.

Since it came with no instructions and I could not find any for codealarm I had a regular $2 key made that would work the lock and then "trained" the ECM to the black box by just jumpering power to it till I had it working with the dumb key and the black box/coil combo. So now the ECM just thinks it's another key.

I think the power wires were black and red and I am thinking the black was positive and red negative (backwards just to be sure the average guy could not get it to work I guess)

I do recall my system had a grounded output during starting for the relay or the PATS or other sytem bypass so I put the other wire (black????) to the hot wire for the PTO aux wire that I used to power my guages. A 10 amp isolated wire as I recall and it is near the trailer harness hook up.

What year is your X I will have a FORD Elect Manual for sale as soon as I order a new one from HELMS. Just used it last night for some add ons I was doing in the over head.

I think I paid like $35 for the box and coil thingy

Hope this helps some

You are correct in being concered; if someone knows you have a remote start and assumes you have a key in the box they are off and running.
Even if you cut the key part off all they have to do is hold the pats part of the key next to the switch and pop the lock and turn the switch and it will start. At least with the coil thay have to get past the wiring hook up and fake that out, or trigger the remote start wihout the fob. Chances are they may tear up a few thing but will give up and go on to the next one.

Just my thoughts any way.

Possibly FMT can give us the number for that little black box or anyone; I am sure I am not the only one to use one of these or some one with Ford Dealer installed one shoud have it as well.

It will work with any unit that has an output for a antitheft key system.

As I recall it is not a typical ford number, just a number like 123456
