Your trip computer really only looks at the fuel level in the tank when you start up. So try to start on the level and the number will probably be believable.
After starting, it just keeps on computing how much fuel is being used, if you fill up while running, you will find how mixed up it gets.

With a PPIII, 22 miles means dead empty. Stock, I think I remember going 20 miles with the computer reading 0. I keep EXTREMELY close watch on my MPG, and can tell what's going on with the computer fairly well (unless the PPIII is busy screwing up the MPG, which it does so well).
Now, I'm busy finding out what the WD chip does to my computer and my wallet.
Also, the miles to empty is based on your trip computer's estimation of your fuel economy and your fuel tank reading. My wife's truck has a totally-hosed fuel tank sensor (she's going away for a few weeks next month, so I'll let the dealer have it then). If she's around 1/4 tank, it will show 1/4 for about 10 minutes, and then CLIMB to 1/2 until she shuts it off.
On mine before I took out the PPIII, I could see 24-28 MPG on the computer, which led it to think I had 999 miles to empty after filling up.
The results were 1st tank of fuel 820.1 miles 45.817 gals of fuel = 17.899469 MPG!!!! RATIO was 65% HWY 35% CITY the fill up was to the lip just where I started from... The truck had 1,141.8 miles when I filled it up today. Can wait to see what happen at 15 to 20 thousand (break-in) with 255/65R16 and a PPIII installed. MAYBE I'LL SEE 22 MPG!!!!! "?" Is it a good idea to run it down to fumes? There's some spendy pumps along the way that probably don't like to run dry, Some require fuel passing threw to keep cool and lubricated. What about air locking the injectors? Sorry, with a 800 mi.+ range, my PSD is never below 1/4 tank. cliffsurfs
cliffsurfs - I agree. I refill with fuel between an 1/8 and 1/4 tank. Usually around 32 to 38 gallons. To me, it does not pay to push it unless I have to.
