Hypertech PPIII

I'm looking at the Hypertech because I don't want to mod anything other than the code. I don't tow anything and I'm mostly mileway miles. I just want a little more off the starts, still keeping the RPM around 2,000 - 2,500 and HOPING for a little MORE in the MPG! I just went over 78,000 in 25 months and I'm getting 17.96 MPG (using a excel spread sheet).

What results have you seen? Thanks for any and all replies!

Re: Hypertech PPIII

You can get great deals on them used now. I'd like more power, but it adds a nice amount of torque, egt's stay safe on mine, the shifting firms up nicely, and the throttle response is 200% better than stock.

As for mileage, it should help at least a bit, it's tough to stay off the throttle. No time was it worse than stock in the mpg dept.

Re: Hypertech PPIII

I'm not using the Hypertech but the SCMT on 80 horse and the kind of freeway mileage we get is 21-22+ at freeway cruising no towing.

Re: Hypertech PPIII

My buddy has one on his 00 X , it's been there for 60K+ miles.Just with that alone I definatly agree with swhitney , 200% over stock. I guess I should say 200% over mine,He leaves me in his wake. But that will change soon enough. As soon as I get my 01 X back from FORD.Blown tranny at 24k (all stock) Just goes to show you if its going to break its going to break so why not modify it and have some fun in the meantime.I took his to oregon a couple of times before I bought mine and averaged 18.1 or so ,but that was doing 80. Re: Hypertech PPIII

I have both the Hypertech and Super Chips Micro Tuners. I prefer the Super Chips tuner in my 2000 4x4 Excursion. I have the Hypertech maxed out, on stage 3, and I ran the Super Chips on the “tow safe” program. I don’t have any drag strip numbers, but the Super Chips just seems more responsive to me in my Excursion. Unfortunately, the Super Chips tuner also works in my 96 F-250 and the Hypertech won’t, so I’m stuck with the Hypertech in the Excursion. The Hypertech is still soooo much better than stock that I really can’t complain.

Re: Hypertech PPIII

OB-1 do you need gauges with the SCMT? I have been on the forum for 1 1/2 years. And back when I was following the forum. The hypertech PII was the ONLY non-gauge safe chip/programmer that you could buy.

Can anyone tell me the pros/cons to either the SCMT or Hypertech? I'm sure there has to be differences between them! Which cost less/more? Better Customer Satisfaction???????? THANK TO ALL THAT REPLY!

Re: Hypertech PPIII

I'll just throw in my .02 . . .you need gauges for ANYTHING you do to upgrade the power via the PCM . chip, programmer, whatever. I wouldn't trust any of them to stay 100% safe 100% of the time.

Just my .02

Regards,
Dave

Re: Hypertech PPIII

Sorry for the slow response. The safe answer concerning gages is that all power upgrades should have an EGT, (exhaust gas temperature), gage at the least. That being said, I don’t have any gages, other than stock, on either of my vehicles. I strongly prefer the Super Chips tuner, (SCMT), over the HyperTech. In fact I’ve ordered another SCMT to replace the HyperTech tuner currently running in my 2000 Excursion. While I prefer the SCMT to the HyperTech, the HyperTech is so far ABOVE stock that anyone can feel/see the difference.

As for sources, check out our “links” section.
