I want an Excursion

I have a 94 F-350 turbo Diesel that I bought new. It has 69,000 miles on it and is stored in doors. Needless to say it is in excellent condition, but I need something 4 wheel drive to haul kids and a boat to the river. I am thinking Excursion.I want 2002 and newer, low mileage, diesel, 4 wheel drive, leather. My F-350 is pre-power stroke.Should I go 7.3 or 6.0 liter ? What is the hot ticket for engine up grades ?? Also what is the trick for a mild lift say 3-6" and tire and wheel combo ??

Re: I want an Excursion

I'd go 7.3 in the 02 or 03. The 03 was available with the 7.3 and the 6.0. And if you go 6.0 in an 04 used, make sure it's got the 04 motor. Some of the early build 04's had 03 motors. The 04 6.0PSD got a load of updates that seems to have finally let ford get on top of the reliability issues.

Re: I want an Excursion

Go for it! I use mine in the summer for road trips (about 400 miles round trip) to the lake with my wife and son. Got the flip down dvd system so they sit in the back and watch dvd movies while I drive. Tows great & I am able to take out the 3rd seat for more storage space to put all of my stuff for the boating trip...since I only have one child so far. Does much better than my gasser Expedition did. Big guy loves the room.

Re: I want an Excursion

Ya, I heard that there were some reliabilty issues with 6.0. So you say if I go 6.0 make sure it is a '04, 6.0 ??

Re: I want an Excursion

Loading up the family, hooking up a trailer with alot of room the Excursion is what you need

We're(wife & I) firm believers in the tested and true 7.3L Powerstroke, you can modify it to taste and it retains the sound of a true Diesel engine which is only reason why my wife does not desire a 6.0 in a future truck or an X.

EB trim leather,Limited Leather,XLT premium cloth I believe thats how it goes

I'm sure you can rustle up decent basic mileage 2001-2003 7.3L Excursions here and there,it's just a matter of finding them as the owners are keeping them more now.

Re: I want an Excursion

When we bought ours in 2002, the top of the line was Limited (ultimate), followed by the Limited, XLT (premium) and XLT (Value). We purchased the Limited (ultimate) with the monochrome package and it came with the two tone leather interior, that is now in the Eddie Bauer, and the limited signature on the front seats. Best of both worlds!!

I believe the 2005 top of the line is still the Limited, followed by Eddie Bauer, XLT, and XLS, at least that is how it is listed on the Ford web site without changing options. If you go by leather, I think the two tone leather in the Eddie Bauer is real nice.

Which ever one you get, your gonna love it!!

Happy hunting!!

Re: I want an Excursion

My wife really likes here Excursion. She used to like driving my F250 but now when I want to take the Excursion she doesn't want to drive the F250!

The 00-03 7.3 Excursions are all good. If your looking for used you may find the best deal on a low mileage 00-01. The only downside to the 02-03 7.3's is they have powder coated rods versus the 00-01 forged rods. The rods don't really make much of a difference unless your planning to modify the truck a lot. The 02's and up have the nice head lights and cup holders though.

Whatever you do don't buy a 03 6.0 Excursion!!! You may find some really low mileage ones on used car lots=buy backs, be carefull.

It took me over 3 months last year to find the X we bought. It was bought with 104K and now has 127K.

I second that. Honestly, go test drive one and see how it feels. Once I decided I wanted one I spent at least 20 minutes a day for about 2 months browsing autotrader, local dealer sites, etc...

I finally saw one last week (friday), flew out and bought the thing this past sunday. I posted another thread on it, but long story short: '01 limited, FLAWLESS exterior & interior, 4x4, diesel, and I love it.

Re: I want an Excursion

I was set on buying a f250 to haul my toybox around with but a friend of mine had an X for sale and it never dawned on me that the X could be a very good tow vehicle. I don't know why, but I just didn't think about it. Mine is not a daily driver, only occasional towing duties and weekend driver. I work construction so I have a beater Toyota to get around work in. It's a 2001 Limited w/ 7.3 in it. Mine only has a SCMT in it for extra HP, but I need it with 35 inch tires.

I love mine and I actually bought mine from another member here...Skygod73. I was told by many people here, once you go diesel, you'll never go back. BOY...were they right. I'll never have a full size truck/SUV that ISN'T a diesel. I think the X rides a little better than the f250/350 due to the weight in the rear.

Anyhow, just like everyone here is saying...DO IT. You won't be sorry. I can't comment on the 6.0 but my 7.3 does me just fine.

My 2003 6.0 runs much better than my 2000 7.3 . I have not had a single problem with it.
