Im considering an excursion

Im currently looking at a 2000 xlt diesel ,72000 mls. looks real clean except for some rust on the rear end, last owner probably towed a boat. Can anyone help me with some good or bad points about these trucks? Theyre asking $20,000

Like I have said before take the air intake tubing off and look for dirt and worn compressor wheels on the turbo. Have a trusted diesel tech look at it for you. A dusted engine is no way to start off a new truck purchase.

Re: Im considering an excursion

Sounds like a good price. FWIW, I paid $27K for my '01 limited diesel, 51K miles, new tires, absolute mint condition.

The points to look at are the same as what applies to any superduty; regular maintenance, was the transmission cared for, etc.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but I'm not actually aware of any "trouble points" these vehicles other than standard car buying stuff (make sure everything words [such as the ESOF/4wd], etc...)

Re: Im considering an excursion

Don't let the rust on the rear end scare you. If it is on the differential cover that is normal for these Fords. It looks horrible so I wire bruched and painted both of mine.

Re: Im considering an excursion

I bought my Limited last March for $17500 with 134K miles on it.

Things to look for in addition to above;

Ball joints replaced, brake history, tranny replaced, all fluids maintained including differential and SCA additive. Take it home for a couple of days and drive it and then get back to us with your thoughts.

Re: Im considering an excursion

Fords incentive program isn't bad, and financing is at an all time low!...if you can swing it, add 24K to the pot for a good deal on an 05'... if not, check that Diesel out very well, tranny too!... especially if towing was suspected.
