First time in 7 years of owning diesel's, I actually let it happen. Stranded in my own neiborhood, with all these people I pass on a daily basis, and a cop laughing at me...How embarrasing!! The best part was starting it back up, what a show. That Excursion bounced around and side to side like one of those jumpy ghet-to-mo-beels with the hydrolics and shiny gold spoke hub caps. I thought that 7.3 was going to fly out at me(that's what I deserve for starving my baby). I painfully watched it do that for about a minite, then shut her down. I loosened the fuel filter cap, turned the key to the on position, and let the bowl fill up. Shut the key off, tightened the filter lid, and cranked her back up. Much better..within a minuite, she ran like new.
All this to say...Running out of fuel isn't such a big deal, as long as all your neihbors don't see you.
Have a nice day!!!
Don't worry you are not the only one to do that. I ran out of fuel too, long story, but I keyed twice and it cranked right up and purred like a kitten. I guess I got lucky. And it won't ever happen again!!
With a 44 gal. fuel tank? I can understand why you'd be upset. I hope to buy an X before they become extinct. With my oldest starting college this fall it may be tight. I do like the truck. I may have to buy a used one to have money left over for an air suspension though!

How about running out of diesel fuel with 6 gallons in the box! Was in a hurry and thought I could make it. The truck ran out of fuel at 80 mph. It took 10 minutes for it to fire and it ran very badly for a few miles. Didn't pop the hood just fired it over.

I just did it the other week also. Took about 2 minutes of rough running then it smoothed out. I shut it down the second I felt the power go, that may have helped. I was 5 miles from the station and had to ride my sled down the side of the road to get fuel.

What could be mechanically worse is running out of oil for example the quicky drive thru lube place doesn't tighten the oil pan plug

Well, my suspicions are finally confirmed!
Dude, I can't BELIEVE you let this happened after the lecture I got from you on how bad it would be to run this sucker dry! I took your message to heart and gave the lecture to my darling bride as well. Now when I bring up the topic she says, "I KNOW, I KNOW...ENOUGH ALREADY!" Maybe I should have her call you up and give you a stern talking to (she gets lots of practice on me and the kids).
Now this diesel padwan is disillusioned with his diesel jedi. The very fabric of society is unravelling before my very eyes.
No wonder I didn't see you Sunday at church...must have still been too embarrased over the ordeal!
I happened to be reading my PSD Supplimental Guide this weekend. It talked about running out of fule and what to expect ike rough idling until the system purged the air and all. I was suprised they talked about it like it wasn't a big deal and that the truck would clear itself up once you got fuel back in it.
Makes me feel better, but I still don't "plan" on doing it.

Bill, thats why I don't use any to change my oil.The word "quicky" to me is defined as half assed.Years ago I had my crown vic's oil changed at one of those places, and ended up almost locking up the owner for attemted fraud. He came into the office and showed me a stripped oil plug for a chevy, needless to say I left with a free oil change and a very nervous grease monkey.
Gee I wounder why the district atty's office set him up with a car that had hidden cameras, payback is a *****,and you know what revenge is.

Running out of fuel on late model cars and trucks is harder on the fuel pumps than engines. Fuel pumps need fuel to lube and cool themselves, running dry electrical fuel pumps causes pre-mature failure. As for being a idiot, "don't cop to that!" let people find out for themselves. cliffsurfs 01 EX psd tri-piller gages Bils. Helwig rear st. ETC.
