Re: Indash GPS

I did a bunch of research on all that stuff, last year, because I wanted an in-dash unit also.....Bottom line was that the units did not have good ratings for GPS accurracy according to all the reports that I read.....
Looking back now, I see that a lot of the units NOW have different numbers on them....MAYBE they are better.....
I ended up with a Garmin 7200, with a 7" screen, so I could see it...
It's mounted on a bracket, down near the hump, and it works pretty good...
Bought from a GPS mailorder company in Vegas...$1100 or something

Re: Indash GPS

I have a kenwood head unit that uses a Garmin receiver and works great. All the new Kenwoods use the Garmin receiver and have a port for FM or XM traffic.

Re: Indash GPS

I see that the GVN52 uses a remote control. Got any pics of that? Did you mount it somewhere? I don't like the idea of having to fiddle with a remote and it says that the GVN52 doesn't work with touch screen A/V systems.

So I guess I'm still leaning toward a new head unit that has built in navigation, like the Pioneer AVIC series.

Re: Indash GPS

Pionner AVIC Z1 (or Z2)...works perfect...built in HD..so the nav is very fast and does a ton of other things. I did keep my factory steering wheel controls with the help of a small aftermarket unit that reprograms them. Fits perfect too.

Re: Indash GPS

My Kenwood works perfect with the Garmin and I have full function going down the road unlike the new Pioneer which requires the truck to be stopped. There is an inertia switch inside the pioneers which can be disabled but is not for everyone. I have a touch screen and I don't have any remote for the Garmin works straight from my head unit.

Re: Indash GPS

I'm not a big fan of in-dash receivers. They are usually not as accurate as they do not utilize the latest chipsets and you can't take them from vehicle to vehicle. I bought the Garmin Nuvi and love it!! I can swap it between any of our three vehicles very quickly. Its hard to get a multi-fuction device to do as good of a job as a dedicated device (but thats not saying it won't work..).

Re: Indash GPS

Thats why Kenwood went with the Garmin unit the entire chip set and everything is contained in the garmin brain unit and is fully upgradable via internet. I can not how ever be moved from one vehicle to another. Well not with out some major work anyways.

Re: Indash GPS

My brother just put the stationary Kenwood in his 06 F150 and the nav works perfect. My brother in law and cousin have the top dollar Kenwood flip ups and the navigation works perfect.

If you have a lap top you can get a Microsoft navigation for around $120, just plug and play, with voice prompt, easy to use.
