"X" didn't cause the tragic death...people making bad choices did. Your title makes this accident sound like the stories Rush reads where the press reports that a 'SUV' hit a tree killing all on board...as if the SUV was responsible, not the driver. Am I not supposed to have my kids around our X? Your desire to make this point is admirable but putting the X into your equation is irresponsible and flawed.
could of easily even been an F250 or any type of vehicle. The kid made a bad choice and now his poor family has to live with it. Not to mention it wasn't even the drivers fault and the driver will think of how he ran his friend over and killed him for ever .

"I don't think we'll ever know why he jumped on the car," Barry said.
We won't? Who has never jumped onto a running board or step of a moving or anout to move truck? Especialy as a kid. I rode on the step of my Grand Fathers '69 Ford step side more than in the cab I think. It was a kid being a kid and it was time for statistical data.
My 2 cents on the thread. You guys are a little rough. It was a kid, it was an X and it did result in death. If it were a 1978 Toyota step side pick up, it could have been the same story, same result....maybe not. I agree, the kid did was every kids does, made a bad choice. Some get killed, some learn from it and some go on to be adults that make bad decisions. It's life.

My goal in posting this link was simple. An "X" is more likely to be a family vehicle therefor more children are around this kind of vehicle. If this story should provoke someone to remind the kids or love one to be more careful then I achieved my goal.
For the record I love the "X" and yes it could have been any kind of vehicle but in this case it was an "X".I never said the "x" caused the death. Read it any way you want Bashing the "x" was not the idea

That is just depressing and bizarre (sp) regardless. If you jump on a Running board and lose your footing, would'nt you generally fall backwards??? How did he fall forward?? Tragic regardless. However, obviously could happend regardless of what rig, Denali, Suburban, Etc.... not just and Ex.

I hope there aren't any parent out there letting there kids take a ride in there vehicles on the exterior of the vehicle. People get run over and killed by small passenger cars too.
This story reminds me of a man in Canada at a truck stop a year ago who decided to step up to the driver side door area of a fully loaded 18 wheeler. After the driver told the man he didn't have any money for him he started pulling away from the truck stop. The man lost his footing, fell off the semi and was run over and killed by the trailer.
It's a shame to see kids in the prime of there life dieing for making stupid one second mistakes.

I once loaned some money to an employee who bought a Explorer. While drinking the "first day" he owned the Explorer he was driving down the road showing off to friends.....climbed out the window crawled out on the roof and was attempting to climb in the OTHER window when the explorer went off the side of the road into a ditch and flipped on top of this nut job. I never got my money back. I never blamed this on the Explorer. Blamed myself for loaning money to a nut job.

We all do stupid things....once when in high school we hot wired a front end loader. We drove it around to a big party and a bunch of people jumped in the bucket, on the running boards and in the cab, maybe 20 or so. I was driving and someone grabbed the shifter and thru it in reverse, the loader stopped dead and the bucket slamed to the ground from about 10ft up. We were unable to stop it since we had no key, i was able to put it in nuetral and it rolled to a stop. I thought for sure someone had been run over and crushed but no one even had a scratch, they thought it was part of the ride!!!! Well I was lucky and lived to do more stupid things but have since stopped (for about 20yrs now) my point is it is all fun and games until something like this happens, there are no reasons, no faults, just bad luck or timing. It is a tradgety no doubt but serves as a lesson to those involved and a wake up call. Unfortunatly the one who was involved cannot learn from this, he is in a better place but left a wake of sorrow and hurt. I pray for the parents who now will be reminded whever they see a boy his age running down the street. That is a shame.

I agree the post title is misleading. Maybe "Kids + running boards"... or "Kids + autos"...I remember a lot of kids jumping on all sorts of cars and trucks in college and H.S....with and without running boards.
