Re: Just got an Excursion!
You should see something around 13 in the city and 15-18 on the highway depending on your speed and load. You can get it into the low 20's when the roads are nice and flat but the 18 will be about average. These trucks are not the best for the daily short commute but are amazing on the open road. There are not too many things to watch out for, just keep an eye on the air filter case. The top lifts up to expose a brick filter (that I use to get from pep-boys) the problem is that it clips on the front end and fits into a slot on the back. If the previous owner was lazy, he may not have put it on correctly. So go check it, it should sit flat all the way around. In addition, you should check the plastic hoses that go from the filter box to the turbo. They have been known to crack on the bottom and suck in dirty air. Otherwise, the 7.3 was a very good engine. Keep the oil clean (change every 5k miles) and keep all other filters clean. It should do well for you. The only real important addition to the truck would be a good steel grille guard. We had a Go Industries guard on our 02 X and it saved our lives in a near head on wreck. We walked away with bruises; the other guy was taken away in a Coast Guard Helicopter. Treat it well, don't abuse it and it will grow old with you like the family dog. Welcome to the forum be sure to also visit the 7.3 drivetrain forum. They can handle the drivetrain and we can handle the body and some drivetrain questions.
