I've heard enough from high milage X's with 285's and their safe history that I'm going to give it a try. I rarely tow anything so that is not a factor.
Problem is.....In this whole damn state there isn't a full set of 285 BFG KO's.(there are no 295's of any brand here and shipping here would kill you financially)
Therefore I have a choice to make between a set of 4 285/75R/16 BFG AT T/A's (the old standby)found locally (I've got the price down to $145 ea. mounted and balanced) ...or.. a set of five Bridgestone 285/75R/16 Dueller AT's ($149 ea. mount and balanced)
I just can't seem to make my mind up.
I wish there were more people that have used the Duellers.
Which set?
Alright!!! You all have pushed me over the fence too! I am purchasing BF Goodrich 285/75R16 All-Terrain A/T KO's and putting them on the stock 7" polished aluminum Limited wheels.
I have read your very valuable input these last few days; I also talked with my local mechanic who said "he'd do it in a heartbeat" and "you gotta do it!". He says the 1/2" narrow difference from tire manufacturer recomendation is too small to make a difference.
We will see. If necessary (in my mind), I will subsequently consider wider wheels.
From what I've owned, read on this board, seen in manufacturer advertising, and heard from Merchants Tire (tire shop chain), the BFGs are one of the few tires rated for 50,000 miles; most are not rated. Bridgestone is the parent company of Firestone. I would not (IMHO) purchase from Bridgestone. And, looking at www.etires.com, they have the BFGs and offer free shipping; although locally, Merchants Tire would install and balance for the same price as etires sells, so you might have to spend another $10 a tire for this service.
I have the old BFG 295/75r16's on factory rims and love them. They are wearing great. I had them on my 99 F250 for 20,000 miles and now on my X for 20,000 miles and it looks like I will get at least 10,000 more miles easy. Having a 4X4 with 2 solid axles, if you rotate and inflate them properly the tires will wear very even. Don't forget to get the speedo recalibrated by your friendly local Ford dealer. It helps the shift points and milage (tremedusly, trimendisly, trumendusly) a lot!! Do a search for speedo recal and under SmokeyWren for accurate rev's per mile to have Ford enter. Smokey has done a lot of research on this and was right on for 295's.

I bought a an XLT diesel listed @ $43,300 for $36,900 two weeks ago with the 0.9% financing to boot. First thing to go were those !@#$$% Firestones. I bought LT285/75R16D BFG AT KO's after reading several of the posts in this forum and they are money well spent. I purchased the tires special order through SEARS auto center. I paid $155 per tire with no additional shipping charge. However, Sears refused to mount the tires for me because the size wasn't recommended in their master fit book. I ended up having them mounted for $10 each by my local mechanic. Hopefully, I can get some of my money back from Ford in light of the expanded tire probe which might include the O.E. Steeltex A/T's.
My Ford dealer offered to replace my Firestones with Michelins or BFG 265/75R16 if I would pay dealer cost. The catch? Dealer cost is $165 per tire for the Michelins or $135 per tire for the BFGs. I think I can get the tires myself at better prices. Any thoughts?

My Excursion just came in on 9/15/00. I ordered the 2001, of course it had the Firestones tires. I made it clear the tires had to be replaced, the dealer asked what I wanted! I made the choice of the Michelin LTX A/T's(Same size at the factory tires). I feel the ride is much better. I spoke to Michelin directly who suggested that I run the tires at 45psi unless loaded which I should bump up to 50psi at that time. I paid nothing extra at all. So far love the truck!

Man, I gotta think they are lying to you. My dealer quoted me right at $140 apiece for BFG A/Ts in 26575R and I know those dirty mother jumpers wouldn't give me any kind of good deal!
