Kudos for the Power Stroke Excursion..(yes, a little gloating) long
It's a little long, but thought some of you Power Stroke Excursion owners would appreciate this. The Power Stroke Gods where certainly smiling yesterday. I was on the mountain with my kids watching the Dog Sled Races. The sled teams where set up in the parking lot where the snowmobiles usually unload. So the trucks pulling their sleds had to use the higher parking lot to unload. To get to this parking lot required a steep 1/4 mile climb to the top. I watched several vehicles struggle to make it all the way up. The road was a flat dirt road, but was covered with snow and ice and had 3-4 foot piles of snow lining the edges. I looked over and saw a Dodge 2500/Cummins Crew Cab pulling a four place enclosed trailer up the hill. He had made it about 3/4 the way up and started spinning. He started sliding back even though he had all four tires spinning forward. He slid about a hundred yards back before jack-knifing the trailer into the 4 foot snow bank. He couldn't budge the truck and trailer at all now. They un-loaded all four sleds and still couldn't get anywhere. I decided to go help and see what I could do. I pulled up and asked him if he needed a pull. He just smiled and said you can try but I'm probably going to need a snow plow. We hooked up and I eased into it until I had about a foot of slack. I then mashed on it and jerked him out and didn't let off until I got him to the top of the hill. It was awesome. The old X spun some with the X-Terrains but then grabbed hold and didn't look back. The Cummins owner and his buddies where blown away. He even commented that he would not tell anyone a Power Stroke yanked him out like that. One hour later, it happened again. This time it was a Cummins powered 3500 Crew cab with a utility flat bed pulling a 35', tripple axle, goose neck trailer with 6 Polaris RMK's aboard. He made it a bit farther than the first Dodge but came to a stop and then started sliding back. He slid back down the hill about 75 yards before jack-knifing his trailer into the snow bank. They un-loaded all but one sled and still couldn't make it. I drove up and asked him the same question, do you need any help? He also smiled and said I couldn't but thanks. I told him I'd just pulled one up an hour ago. He agreed to let me try. I struggled a little more with this one. His trailer weighed 5-6k lbs. empty. I worked the front tires back and forth making an inch or two at a time. I had to back off a little as I watched the pyro climb into the high 12's. Then the tires bit hard and I jerked him out of the snow bank and mashed it all the way to the top. Sitting up top (watching all of this) was a Sherrif in a Dodge/Cummins 2500. He just smiled as I crested the top of the hill pulling this load behind me. There where 15-20 snowmobilers watching and they all started clapping. They told me they were amazed at how hard the Excursion pulled and the amount of black smoke. Needless to say, I was impressed. My girl friend told me I had a perma grin on my face the rest of the day.
Take Care,
Lane

Hi 'Bad. I don't think mine would do that. I looked at pictures of yours and there seems to be just a tiny bit of difference in the tires and I'll just bet there are other differences not-so-obvious by noting your signature. The weight, I'm sure does help. What does an Excursion weigh? 7600 lbs? Almost 4 tons? I have an '05 Eddie Bauer 4x4 stock with the Power Stroke. I don't think I'll attempt that. Congradulations! I took your story to work. The Dodge fans didn't believe it, either.

Mine weighs in around 8k pounds w/a full tank of fuel. I know that weight did help. When you have that kind of weight coupled w/ good traction and plenty of ponies, your going to move something. Reminds me of when I was back in Texas with the NTXPSA at our Shiloh Ridge, off-road trips. When one of us got buried in the mud, it took another 4 ton diesel to get us out. Half ton pick ups couldn't even budge us.
Take care,
Lane

Lane,
The Shiloh trips were a blast. Lost count how many trucks we pulled out. Seriously doubt I'll do the things in the 05 dually I did with my 00 lifted 250.
BTW, bring your butt back home and we'll drink some beer!

That would be the ones.
Before I ever saw the pics, I knew it was you just by the description he gave of your truck. That was a sweet rig.

Hi Lane,
I've noticed in some responses to this thread that you have some friends who are members of the North Texas Powerstroke Association. I also noticed that you are a member of the Wyoming Powerstroke Association. Do you know if Kentucky has one? I was just curious.
I also noticed on your Excursion that you have P32560R18 tires. I have an '05 F-350. I would sure like to replace those Continental tires. Are those X-Terrains B.F. Goodrich? I understand that my choices are limited and I was wondering about the quality of those tires. My '05 Excursion has the B.F. Goodrich tires. I think they are P27570R16's. That is why I think I'll just stick to pavement. Thanks for your response. Craig.
