Lift is on!!!

Put on 5.5" Fabtech lift and ProComp 315/75R16 on my X yesterday! It looks great and rides better than it did before (51K on stock springs, shocks and tires ). We thought we were getting only blocks for the rear, but the kit came with rear springs and 1" block. We used it all and it all worked out well.

The only issues we seem to have now are:

1. There is that "shudder" just during hard accel that everyone talks about, but more than that, there is a "growl" when accelerating to higher speeds (60 mh or so). We have a few ideas on what to try, but would love to have some input!

2. My steering wheel is off center now. Not sure how to fix that, but it is very annoying.

Thanks, in advance, for input on these things! We hope to get it all fixed asap!

Re: Lift is on!!!

Well you have changed the driveline angle quite a bit. It could be binding or just new harmonics. The only way to tell is to see the wear or wait until something brakes Did you put on new tires? That would cause it. The stearing is easy. If you did not use a new drop stearing arm you need to. If so you just adjust it from the "for the lack of better terms" front steering bars. There is a joint where you can turn the adjuster one way or the other (depending on what way you want the wheel to turn) until it is straight. You can do this on the ground and with two people in a matter of seconds.

Re: Lift is on!!!

Just a wag:

Did the 1 inch blocks have a taper to them? If so, did you put them in so that the small part of the taper was pointing forward or backward?

If the blocks didn't have a taper did they kit come with shims for the blocks? (or drop down spacers for the transfer case?)

Just guess's. On the lift kit's I've installed they typically change the pinion angle on the axle by using tapered shims, or tapered blocks. If the problem is from a bad pinion angle you could get a double CV driveshaft built that would eliminate it.

Just my .02

Regards,
Dave

Re: Lift is on!!!

I installed 4 inch blocks in the rear of mine and have the same complaints. I had rear shims added and it stopped the shutter on hard acceleration. The growl is still there but less of it. Ok for me. I do believe the only way to fix it all is the cv joint in lieu of u-joint.

The steering is easy as described above.

Re: Lift is on!!!

Did some tweaking on it today....

Took out the factory rear blocks and left in the 1" blocks that came with kit (they were not tapered). This leveled it out (it was about 3" higher in the rear before taking out factory blocks) and made it ride better. The vibration/growl is about 80% gone now.

Any recommedations on double CV driveshaft? I figure that this will fix the problem for good.

As far as the steering wheel, I am taking it in for alignment and will probably just have them adjust it straight. Unless, they want to charge me extra, then I will tweak on it myself.

Thanks for the input!

Re: Lift is on!!!

I've never done it for an X before, but I've had real good luck with "Tom Woods Driveshaft" for Jeeps. (fast, great service, etc) We've had 3-4 of them built for various guys I know and they are excellent. If you're appearance freak they even offer some form of coating for the shaft so it stays pretty.

Here's the URL:

Re: Lift is on!!!

Thanks for the input! I will contact both places and see what they can do for me.

I have another question...

How have people with lifts and bigger tires adjusting their speedometer?

Re: Lift is on!!!

Do a search in the "upgrades and aftermarket". Smokey had a really good writeup on the techniques that your Ford Dealer can use to adjust your speedometer. From what I understand if you have the "magic number" when you go in it's about 5 minutes work or less. (he also has the instructions to give to your ford tech in case he doesn't know how to do it)

Regards,
Dave
