Light Switch Removal?

Has anyone installed guages yet? If so, how did you get the light switch assembly out of the dash, in order to connect to the dimmer switch for the background lights. The switch I have is different from the one described in the F250's. My switch does not have the pull out, so I can't remove using the recommended method described on the DIS page. Does anyone have a answer?

TIA.

turn the headlight swith to the on pos and pull the knob. insert a thin tool to release the switch knob(you will see a little hole in the knob while in the on pos). turn the knob 180 degrees and put it back on. turn the knob untill the back of it is in the off position. turn the knob fully clockwise and pull out on the headlight switch.

Re: Light Switch Removal?

Ford may have changed the head light switch for the 2000 model ??

On my 2000 F250 I found it necessary to remove the dash trim panel.

This reqires removal of the radio, to expose 2 screws which must be removed to remove the dash panel.

After they are removed it is just a matter of pulling off the trim panel evenly and smoothly as the rest of the fastners are clips.

When the dash trim panel is pulled away from the dash , you will have to disconnect the head light switch from its wiring, to do this you must first release the red clip locks.

Then you wll find a lever on the back of the switch which must be pushed over to release the switch from the trim panel.

Re: Light Switch Removal?

I should be able to install my gauges this weekend as long as the paint finally gets here. I wanted to get this back up top, as I have this question also. It does not seem that the light switch pulls out in my Excursion. Is the solution to remove the trim as in the post above? Any alternative to hooking the lights to the dimmer on an Excursion?

Also, for those that have installed the trans temp gauge. Where do you access, and what color is, the "key on" wire for the gauge? Want to make sure I'm doing the right thing and would like to get feedback from someone who has done this on an Excursion.

Re: Light Switch Removal?

The pigtail for the electric trailer brake controller (F81B-14K122-BA all Excursions have this pigtail, they all have the trailer tow package) contains five leads, and a white tag that explains them. Remove the fuse access panel below the steering column, on mine the pigtail was already plugged in to a gray connector on the right side of this area

Brown Illumination (dimmable gauges)
Dark Blue Trailer brake feed (to trailer)
Red trailer brake control feed
White Ground
Light green stop light to brake control

The Brown illumination wire carries the dimmable feed for dash panel lights and gauges! You don't need to mess with the light switch, instead access the wiring harness at a customer access point already provided.
