Experienced X owners,
When I finally decided I had to have a 2000 X 4x2, and needed the 0.9% financing to swing the deal, the only one I could find didn't have a limited-slip differential. Everyone of you guys has a 4x4 with LS. Is limited slip a crucial item? For towing? I live in Texas so no snow. No towing yet. Can you get it installed?
Since you're in Texas and don't have snow, there is no practical reason to get limited slip. I've had open differentials (no limited slip) in a couple other trucks up here in MN and got around just fine during the winters. The money you'd spend on the limited slip and installation would be put to better use on something that'll give you a little increase in power and/or mileage. Or you could do the unthinkable and just save the money.
BTW, you won't gain any advantage in towing if you get a limited slip installed.

Gracias. I'll concentrate on the suspension, tires, and maybe chips but I'm not sure if chips are good for the longevity of the vehicle.
The only advantages in limited slip is in a off road situation or on a boat ramp.and a good one is around 700 to 800 installed. mike

If you dont have snow or ice then you dont need it. I have two X's and one has it (mine) and one without it (hers). I got it because I get off road and I have to deal with mud.

Now, I was agonizing about having an X, and a Superduty, both with PSD's----but you've got me beat!!!!!! 2 X's!!!!!! You da man!!!!
Did you get the X with a Powerstroke Diesel? To the best of my knowledge, all PSD's came with limited slips...at least, all of the Limiteds I saw did. I am assuming this was true of the XLTs.
Or, maybe that's just the most popular configuration. I never saw a PSD X without limited slip on the car lots when I was shopping.

Xers,
I got one of the last 2000 Limited PSD in Houston. It has 4x2 and a "3.73 Ratio Regular Axle - No Charge" on the sticker, which I kept for my records. I figured it wouldn't be a problem unless I went to Taos for Xmas or got a big boat on a steep ramp. Then I keep seeing all of your signatures w/ 4x4 and LS and I'm getting envious. Maybe in my next X, in about 20 years when this one gives out.
Can't imagine going 4x4 and not getting LS. If I'm in the West Desert and hit mud I don't want to be driving (traction) only two wheels (the one not slipping in the front and the one not slipping in the rear). In the slippery stuff, 4x4 turns into 4x2 real fast.
With LS, and by riding my brakes to keep it engaged, I can get 4x3 when I need it (one front wheel and two rear wheels getting traction).
I do not want my 8,000 lb. Beast stuck. There are few 4x4s around big enough to tow me out if I bury it.
Please explain what you mean by riding the brakes to keep the LS engaged. I haven't owned anything with LS before. I recently turned the X into 4x2 as you say. I was stuck in mud with one front and one rear spinning. I didn't realize I could use the brakes to modulate the LS.
The LS works better if it has some resistance. If you find yourself in "4x2" again, lightly apply the brakes while keeping the power on. This will force the LS to transfer more torque from the spinning wheel to the still (traction) wheel.
My 4x4 club buddies taught me this one - it works!
