Looking to buy Excursion

We are looking at buying my wife a late 04-05 limited 6.0 excursion 4x4.
I have a few questions since I have never ridden or drove one.
We have an 05 F350 so I know about the 6.0 and how the trucks handle.

Did the torqueshift trans start with the 6.0 motor in mid-03 or later?
What is the preference of quad captian chairs vs 2nd row bench?
What are some of the things to look for and things to stay away from?
Is the factory DVD system all that great?

Any help is appreciated.

Brian Moore

Re: Looking to buy Excursion

As far as the Torqueshift, it's the only thing thats ever come with the 6.0, except a 6 speed which was never available in the Excursion.

DVD is OK. Works fine and does what it's supposed to do. Wireless headsets work good too.

I prefer the bench for more seating.

Re: Looking to buy Excursion

Hi Brian,

One thing that many people don't realize,(and I didn't until I bought mine) is that while the '05 Excursion got the sheetmetal from the '05 Superduty, it DIDN'T get the new front suspension. The Excursion still has the OLD Superduty suspension with the solid axle with leaf springs, at least on the 4X4 models. I was looking at buying the truck in my signature, and I got underneath and looked at that suspension. I also have an '05 Superduty. Now, what is wrong with this picture? I like my Excursion, just keep in mind that the '05s don't have the coil spring suspension.

I haven't had any trouble with the transmission on the Excursion. I have on the Superduty, but it was only in the programming. I did have a puddle of transmission fluid form under the Excursion after I got it home from the dealership. I took it back and they placed a dye in the transmission fluid and didn't find anything. They suspect it was just overfilled. Go figure.

As far as the seating, it is a toss-up. If seating maximum people is a priority the bench in the way to go. I believe it is more comfortable. Mine has the four seats and I do like to be able to walk throught the middle. Those second row "Captain's Chairs" really aren't, but they aren't as bad as one might think. Another advantage of a bench is it will fold somewhat flat and give you more useable space behind the front seats for those 4X8 sheets of plywood. Ah, but you have a truck. Just my 2 cents. Craig.

Re: Looking to buy Excursion

As a passenger in both options I like the bench better. In the quads I felt out of loop and more like a passenger no dvd either. If there is nobody next to you in the back you will want to be in on the conversations that may be occuring w/ the 2 up front. W/ the bench you can slide to the center and ruin any conversation and get all the attention you need.

My youngest son (15) still sits in the center of the second row even though he is about 6'1" so he can see.

Re: Looking to buy Excursion

I have driven a SD with the caption chairs, and I prefer the bench up front. How difficult is it for an adult to climb in to get to the 3rd row seat?

Thanks,
Brian Moore

Not bad at all, if you move the 2nd seat forward as it's designed to do. Problem is, mostly with kids, they're up and over before you get it moved.

For the kids, they are going to be all over heck's 1/2 acre, anyway. Basically, once the second row seat is moved it is fairly easy. My 85 year-old aunt can do it just fine. The rear door on an Excursion is about 4 inches longer than in the trucks and it affords good access to the third row seat. Again, just my 2 cents. Craig.
