I am looking at getting the wife an Ex to replace her 2004 Lexus GX 470, don't ask . So my questions are which year to get and why. I want a 7.3 no 6.0 thank you very much . Pro's and con's of each year and upgrades done by Ford would be very helpfull.
Thanks for your help, Cary

I love my 2000 7.3L, which is the first year Ex's were made. But obviously you'll want to get the newest possible...a 2003 7.3L.
The harder choice you'll have is between XLT Premium, Eddie Bauer, and Limited versions. It just depends on which trim package features you like best.
In my opinion, you can't go wrong with ANY of the Excursions. Maybe the first year's 6.0L could cause problems, but if you bought a brand new 6.0L Ex you'd probably be just fine. That 6.0L has a lot of get-up-and-go!
Coming out of that Lexus, my guess is that you'll be looking for a Ltd.
No problem there. Most Ltd. (at least around me) are PSD.
They only made 2003 X 7.3 (like mine ) for 4 months, so there are not many of them around. Probably easier to find a 2002.
Don't be surprised if they all have a few miles on them. People buy these to drive, so they go on road trips often.
Of course, except me. Still not quite to 1600 miles yet. Going to KC in July, should put me over 2000.

Unless you are dead set against buying a new one, you're doing yourself a dis-service thinking like that. The 6.0 is great!! An '03 (which may be really hard to find) that's had the issues fixed, or is one of the many that had no issues may be fine, although I'd probably be a little cautious. No reason to stay away from an '04.

Wife likes her 2001 Limited so much, decided to keep it 1 more year. We have been everywhere with it. Lots of room, kids don't have to touch each other, (makes trips go easier).
Other than scheduled maintenance, Has been to shop 1 time for ice chunk in gas tank, that's all. (knocking on wood now).
She will love it.

Thanks for your imputs. The reason I won't get a 6.0 is because of the chance of geting a bad one, with my luck if it can go wrong it will . I fell that all the possible problems with the 7.3 are easely fixed with a little of my time and $$.
I have been searching the local area and have found a 2003 7.3 Eddie Bauer with 38k miles for $41.5k asking price. Love the color, brown. Its extremly clean no visable flaws and its only about an hour away. . Can anyone on the forum do a oassis check?.
Does this seem like a good price for this model and condition?
Is it possible to get a Ford extended warrenty on a 2003?
Again thanks for your help, Cary

I paid around $40,000 new in October 2000. That 2003 Excursion is 2 years old.
"Does this seem like a good price for this model and condition?"
What is it worth to you?????? Seems very high to me.
"Is it possible to get a Ford extended warrenty on a 2003?"
Not 100% sure, but I believe it has to be still under the factory warranty to qualify. That Excursion is over 36,000 miles so I do not think so. I am sure someone else will jump in if I am incorrect.
Hope this helps,

Ouch. Waaaaaaaay too high.
I can buy a brand new '04 EB PSD around here with -0- miles for $41K.
But yes, it's a 6.0.
Brand new, I bought my XLT 4x4 7.3 PSD for around $39K w/rebate (actually around $41K but I took the 0% financing instead).

We drive the '02 4x4 diesel Excursion Limited "Ultimate" and have been delighted with it. If you do a Google on "bluebook" and check out the prices on two or three sites you'll get an idea on new or used. Kelley (www.kbb.com) and NADA (www.nadaguides.com) are two of the tops on the 'net.
I agree, as sad as it is, the reality is that an Ex does not hold market value that well. The only value that stays very high is the value it's owner puts in it.
So, I concur, $41.5 is way high. That's about what I paid for mine. 2004 loaded EB on A Plan with rebates. If I were to sell it today with just shy of 6000 miles, I doubt I could get $38 for it.
Just a guess from the gut, that's about $10k high, depending on the region. Keep in mind, I'm in North Texas where they may not bring as much as they would in say, New York.

I'm very happy with my '01 X PSD. I picked it up with about 45k miles. Paid about what Edmunds said I should, maybe a bit less (which seems to be alot lower than some of the prices referenced on this site). It's been a good truck all around, and the family loves it. Could not tell you from experience how it ranks against other X model years.
I had a 2000 and now a 2002 but i am holding out for the late 2005 4*4 with the coil springs and the 6.0 after I pay off the 2002
