We bought a set of Goodyear MT/R's last Thanksgiving and have been really satisfied with them. That being said, they are obviously not the best highway tire in the world and we are going to be doing a lot of traveling this summer(my brothers are going to be seniors in high school and they are being recruited pretty heavily by D1 schools to play football). There are a bunch of camps this summer that my mom is going to be driving them to and we decided to get a set of summer tires so that the MT/R's last a bit longer. We just bought a set of the XLT aluminum rims and a set of Limited rims.
Were were looking at another set of Goodyears and want to stay away from Bridgestone\Firestones because of the whole tire fiasco if possible. In particular we were looking at the Goodyear AT/S tire. From what I have read they give a good on road ride, are quiet, and give decent off road traction as well. The only major downside I have read about is that some are very hard to balance. What tires do you guys suggest?
Also, what about putting 285's on the stock rims? My dad is worried about how 285's will affect the speedo as well as how 285's will handle and wear on a stock 7 inch wide rim.
If we do choose to go to 285's, which is what I hope we end up doing, what is the most cost effective way to adjust the speedo for 285's? The MT/R's are 265's so we will need to be able to change the speedo settings every time we swap sets of tires.
Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Don't worry about Bridgstone tires, they are a good tire and you will not be disappointed if you buy the Revo's. I run 285,s as do a lot of other members. There are plenty of posts about the Revos if you do a search. I wouldn't run with any other tire now that I have them.

EDIT: 7 inch rim/wear, no problem. Speedo will be off by 2-3 mph @ 70mph. If you want to change the speedo ,dealer can and should do it for free, they just plug in and change the settings. I havn't done this and don't really see a need for it because I know of the 2-3 mph difference.

I just bought a 2000 X Limited a few weeks ago and it already has 305/70/16 Good Year Wrangler AT/S's on it. They are pretty worn...probably about 10,000 miles left on them...but they are worn even and still ride very good! They look very meaty and tough but ride very smooth. They have not presented any problems for me and I'm thinking about buying the same tire when they are worn out. I'm going to be posting some pictures of my new rig this week.

I've got 285 Revo's and by GPS the speedo is right on. Several people have found that to the the case.

I bought the Michelin LTX 265's this past fall. The most impressive tires I've run on the highway with snow/ice. I drove from N.C. to MI. in the storm we had in December. There was an impressive number of cars/trucks in the ditches on I77 and I80. The stroke was VERY controllable and steady. I should have bought these years ago. There supposed to have decent off road traction but, I only go on the dunes about once a year.

FS-2500 Bypass filter installed.
Velvet rides installed. Joe Servo IDM mod installed. Rear air lift springs.
I've seen a couple of posts about results as you mentioned but frankly I see far more positive posts. I only tow about 7500# and mine tows solid! After the last time I towed, I discovered my tires were under inflated from what I'd like to have them at towing. The only think I noticed was the rear would "swaggle" slightly during slow manuvers which is consistant with the rear tires being underinflated. I have 285 D load range too. I wonder is the 265 E load range have something different about them? I can say 2 posts I seem with "wandering" being described were both 265 E load range.
I may tow the boat again this week with the tires up closer to where they should be towing (there at about 60psi right now compared to the 48psi they were at) and I expect it to be even better.

The more I increased the psi the more sensitive the tires became. You might be on to something with the tire size but I suspect the D vs E load range makes a difference too. They just made me nervous when I towed with them but I’m glad they worked for you.
I love my Michelin LTX M/S in the stock size load range E tires. I might go to a larger size but I will stick with my Michelins. I have had great experience with all my Michelins tires over the years.
Hope this helps,

I'll let you know how it tows with higher psi. That is a good point. Although, mine have about 4800 miles on them now and they don't feel as sensitive as they did new. I also did tow with them when they were new.
BTW, could you go back and edit your post with the link and make it hyperlinked text versus the actual URL as the link? Thanks for all the input so far. I would rather not have to go to the dealer every time we switch sets of tires, so is there any other cheap solution to being able to change the speedo yourself?
