...any suggestions as to what to stay away from with these Excursions?
I will be looking for a '02 or newer, Auto, 7.3, 4x4, leather,...preferrably w/less than 50,000 miles. Under 30k in dinero.

the vehicle themselves are pretty decent. i cant think of anything you should look for other than mechanical condition.

Check to make sure that the tranny was serviced regularly.

Check for steering wander. There was a TSB on the front ball joints.

Some have reported problems with warped front rotors, so check out the front brakes thoroughly.

The 7.3 eats up the factory air filter, so check it and make sure that the lid to the airbox has been put on correctly and securely.

If you want, open the turbo air inlet hose from the air filter and look for dirt or dust. You might find some oil. That is normal. it comes from the PCV valve. Dust indicates poor air filter sealing.

If you can, get an oil same (engine and tranny) and sent it to Blackstone Lab for analysis.
