Loss of value?

I'm dealing for a new Ex and the salesman is telling me that they do not hold value and that I'd do better with a 6.0 F250 or F350. Whats up with this? This is a fleet deal, he has no interest, this is not a hard sell, just a matter of fact comment.Any feedback is appreciated. Ed

Re: Loss of value?

Diesel p/u's hold their value better than SUVs or vans.

That's just the way that it is.

An average car is only worth 40% of MSRP in 3 years. So you're not getting rich buying anything new.

Re: Loss of value?

I have to second what jschira said. The only way I could justify getting into an X was if I was in it for the long haul. If you are somebody who will trade it in 3-4 years I don't know that it's worth it. The PSD X's definately hold their value better than the non-PSD X's though. Saw a V-10 on the lot the other day for 22k and it was only a year old.

Regards,
Dave

I will probably trade in 4-5 years. I know that I will take a hit. My X is one of my toys. I use it to pull my cars to shows. I drive 10-12 hours at a stretch. We had a '99 SD SC. Once the back was loaded up (cooler, suitcases, other stuff we didn't want riding in the trailer), wifey and me just fit. No room at all to move around. Not much I could do as the driver, but I felt sorry for the wife. Stuck in one spot. In the X, she has the room to change seats, move around, stretch out, etc. A p/u rides rougher and is noisier than my X too. The X just makes the long drives that much more pleasant. A CC is too long for me, so I really did not consider this option (although that '04 Harley edition is looking nice).

I'm going to take it in the shorts at trade in time, but that's the cost of entertainment.

Typical cost/benefit analysis. You need to run the numbers and see what's best for you.

BTW, I don't miss not having a p/u. I bought a 4'x6' trailer at Tractor Supply for $300. It will haul more than my old SD (1800 lbs.) and is only 1' off the ground (easy loading).

Re: Loss of value?

If I were you, I'd buy a used PSD X. Once you drive off that lot, you lose X amount of value right then and there. We're in it for the long haul...

Re: Loss of value?

I'm not sure I can see why a pickup would hold it's value better than a SUV. The market is flooded with them. All you have to do is visit any dealers lot and look at what is for sale. The last time I visited the local Ford dealer I had to drive around back before I could find anything other than the 1200 pickups they had on the lot.

It may depend on what area of the country you are in. Here is Texas every other commercial is for a pickup truck. I guess that's why I'm having to pay 455.00 for the advertising fee.

For me there is just to many compromises to getting a pickup. With two small children and a couple of large dogs we need all the interior room we can get for those camping and boating trips.

In this area the pickup has become more of a status symbol that a working vehicle. Most people around here never use them for anything other than commuting back and forth to work or school. It's rare to see many of them ever carrying a load in the bed.

It used to be you could purchase a pickup cheaper than any other vehicle. Being a status symbol has made the price jumps huge. That's why it's now one of the most profitable vehicles any manufacturer makes.

If I wanted to pull a fifth wheel then a pickup might make sense. But with the new Hensley Arrow and Pull Rite hitches you can now get the same towing performance with a conventional hitch.

Re: Loss of value?

I bought mine only because it was so much cheaper than a pickup. I wanted an F250 or F350, but I was tired of beat up trucks with 100k going for mid twenties. I bought mine in mint condition, on eBay for $19,200, it had 68k on it and two years left on the Ford ESP Plus warranty. I have honestly never looked back. I can't believe all the crap it will hold. If I have something nasty to haul, U-Haul rents a 7x12 one ton trailer for $17 a day. Look at the photo's on my link below, I still have less than $20k in it!

The pickups hold there value better even though the market is flooded with them because of the broad audience they appeal to. Commercially they are required by many, farmers require them, weekend warriors need them for toys, then as you mentioned, the "status symbol" crowd is currently into trucks. This huge market is what drives the price on new and used. The "X' market is definately more limited, not everyone wants an SUV of this size. I think if more people were given a risk free chance to put one in their driveway for a month, they would have a hard time returning it to pick there exploder back up.

Re: Loss of value?

i think the reason is ford is killing the X and people do not want the disconued SUV - like buying a model 2003 at full price

this is what i was thinking when i got my 2002 7.3 i did not trust the 2003 6.0 but i was sold on the X

Re: Loss of value?

Used PSD X's are going for close to the same price as new ones in my area, and they are selling.

Re: Loss of value?

Last November I bought my wife the Excursion at Tousley Ford in MN which is touted as the largest Ford dealership in the state by sales numbers. The dealership sells some 600 units per month. There selection on used diesel trucks was huge while the diesel Excursion accounted for only two used. A 2002 with 30K miles fully loaded for sale for $32K and the 2000 fully loaded 4x4 with 104K miles for $18,999. My wife wanted the white one but we new the black one was a better deal.
I've heard the Excursion looses 55% of it's value in 2 years. The Dodge Durango is supposed to have the worst resale value of all suv's.
