The diesel in my wife's Mercedes is very quiet, like most euro-diesels. What I want to know is how loud is the PSD in the Excursion? I have heard many late model PSD F250's-F350's, and they are veyr loud fro mthe outside, but how loud are they inside? Does the Excursion have more sound deadening material?
When I first compared the early 2000 model year Power Stroke versus the V-10 gas, I thought it was very loud. However, in late 2000 model year production, I was told Ford added more insulation and it did the job. Granted, it is not as quiet as the V-10 gas or some other diesels I have heard, but it is not bad. Once you are on the road, you do not even notice the noise. At idle with the windows down, you will hear it. To me, that is a sweet sound. I owned two previous diesels in my years and have driven numerous other ones. I like the power, fuel economy and long life enough to ignore the little grief my wife give me about the noise.

i am about 3/4 deaf from a trip to the orient some time ago. i wear 2 hearing aids and they magnify noise of any kind. i am able to do 75 down the highway and converse with the person in the passenger seat in my x. they do kind of have to talk 'at' me, but they do not have to raise their voices. it is a little hard to hear when i am making the turbo scream.
i can also hear the music better and can sometimes carry on a conversation with it on, but i like to play it pretty loud. my speakers and stuff are stock. changing them out is next when i feel like i can afford it. that was a misstatement. it should be when the spirit moves me to spend sveeral hundred $ for something that is a luxury just for me. i feel like i feel about worrying about fuel mileage on a $40k truck. if i have to ask, i must not need it.
i am not saying that it is gonna be as quiet as a mercedes, but then a mercedes won't carry/pull what it does either. a mercedes truck that would do that makes some noise too. you will ultimately find that you cannot compare the two. one is a car and the other a truck. i do find that the sound that my x makes going down the highway at 75 or 80 makes to be very pleasing and perhaps even relaxing. cool sound.
my $.02, and overpriced at that.

I to was concerned with noise, never have owning a diesel. at cruise you can hardly here it, but on accel. it is definitely a diesel. Like a wooden leg you get used to it. I have less than 600mi. on it so far and and am injoying it more and more. Seems to get quieter after 10 min. or you start to tune it out. Before you buy make sure you test at least two EX's, I drove three, one was significantly louder than the other two. Check idle, stand on both sides (not at the same time) hot and cold, than drive for at lest 10 minutes than check agan. -------------------------------------------- 01 4x4 PDS LTD Bilsteins Ford out fitters: rubber mats cargo liner dash cover wing dash kit
I have been driving a diesel pickup since 1980,. A Toyota, a Chevy, and this is my fourth Ford. This X is by far, the quietest of them all!!!. My PP PSD/SC pickup was quiet but not as good as the X. Ford has extra insulation in the X. You can still hear it some but not much. Heck man that is one of the joys of driving a diesel. Just bump the radio or CD up one knotch and you will never notice the differnce. Unless you really get on it hard you do not even hear the turbo sing to you. I miss that because that is sweet music IMHO .
I think you need to go test drive one, if you are over thirty mile per hour you can barely hear it over the wind noise with the window down.
Good luck on your decission.

Thanks for the help. I have driven a 99 6 speed F250 PSD that my friend owns and found it to be quite loud at first, but got used to it within 3 minutes. With the new 260hp version of the PSD in the Ex, is it any quieter or more powerful than the original 220hp version?
The 2000 Power Stroke was rated at 235 Hp and the 2001 Power Stoke is rated at 250 Hp in the Excursion. In the pick up, the 2001 Power Stroke is rated at 275 Hp with a manual transmission, 250 Hp with the automatic transmission. Not sure if the additional Hp makes that much difference in the noise level.
