Low profile grease fitting

Hi Guys,

I know I've seen this somewhere on TDS, and, I know I didn't dream it! About a year ago, I replaced the ball joints on my friends '03 Excursion with the 7.3 liter diesel and 4X4. They are MOOG joints and so far, so good. Just one complaint. The grease fitting for the upper joints hangs down too low and if left in will contact the universal joint for the front driveshaft. I know I remember someone on TDS said something about some low-profile grease fittings. I need names and part #'s.

Or am I just crazy and there really is no such thing? Thanks in advance for your replies. Craig.

Sorry I can't help but I'm looking for the same thing. I'm installing the ball joints now.

I did some additional searching and it seems the "low profile" is by grinding down the grease fitting.

I just put a small 7mm I think plug in the hole. When its time to grease I remove plug and install a 90 degree grease fitting. Only take about an extra 3 minutes per side.

Oh come on guys, go down to a real auto parts store, you know the type with orange drawers under the counter, customer stools, and some old guy named Hank who's always sitting down at the end passing time, and ask them for low profile zerks. They'll take you to one of the draws and you can choose from dozens of different shapes, sizes, and angles. I leave my zerks in all the time, have for years now, and they clear the u joint just fine.

The last time I took that plug out, I like to never have gotten it back in! Those joints need to be greased when the oil is changed. I got some water forced out the last time I greased them. Craig.

That is exactly what I did yesterday, (carquest, autozone, o'reillys, advance, etc.) and they didn't have a clue what I was talking about. No, Hank didn't know, either. I remembered reading something about a certain grease fitting on TDS. I just wanted to know if there were such an animal. I guess not. Thanks for your replies. Craig.

A carquest store is where I got mine, but it is an old autoparts store that does most of it's business with the trade, not retail. Been around a long time, and I have to drive into the city from the yuppy suburburbs where I live to get to it. Very little room between the front door and the counter, and most of the store is dedicated to their parts shelves behind the counter. (And you're right, Hank is not going to know, as he's just an old timer from the neighborhood killing time in the store since the local barber shop closed)

All I did was take in the Moog zerk that came with the ball joints, and say "I need a lower profile one." They took me to their bulk drawer of zerks, and we found one with the lowest neck they had, with the right threads and 90 degree head, and I bought them. Maybe this is similar to the difference between the old hardware store thats been there for 50 years, and the new flashy box store that was just built.

The zerks you need are out there, but you might not find them at an auto parts store that advertises on TV.
