Ok, I know this has been covered before...cuz I've read about it. But I can't seem to find it tonight.
I installed an EGT gauge and a DPTuner with 60tow, 80tow and 80econo...and all three spike the EGT's with little effort. Also quite a bit of smoke on the 80econo. Oh ya, and LOTS of power.
I really hope the Tymar/BHAF Napa 46637 air filter and Walker BTM Napa 21470 muffler lower the EGT's (and reduce the smoke).
I read a week or two ago that the BTM will lower it by 100 or so...I hope that's true, cuz the tuner is doing me no good where it counts, pulling hills. Haven't towed yet...but I'm guessing that EGT's will be the same there too. I'm towing 2 jeeps to Moab in 2 weeks...and I hope I don't have to keep it in the stock position.
So...can anyone tell me how much the Tymar/BHAF will lower the EGT's? Also, how much will the BTM lower the EGT's?
Does anyone else get tons of smoke on the 80econo setting?
I drove a local summit (Parley's 7120') twice in the last 2 days. Both in the morning hours, 50-70 degrees. I started out in the 80econo setting, and it would just spike too fast when I needed to pass or regain speed. Modulating the throttle according to EGT's (1200 limit) resulted in lower actual speeds than the stock setting (see below)
I let off the throttle and hit the 60hp tow mode (high altitude) and it was a little better, but not much.
This morning, I kept it in the stock mode. With the cruise on 70 (75 actual) it hovered between 1100-1200 most of the time, reaching into the 1250's at the steepest before downshifting to maintain speed. Then it dropped to 1050. (tangent: it never used to downshift with the 295s, only with the 315's)
I did this for two reasons: To establish a baseline before intake and exhaust mods, and to find out what it has "survived" in the past (stock and blissfully ignorant of EGT's)
Thanks for your help!
Brett

I have the same 60T/80E combo, and my EGT's spike as well. It's frustrating being unable to use full-throttle.
Part-throttle response is great, and that's what I'm using my 80E for at the moment. But if I get on it more than half-throttle, I see over 1300ºF.
I changed to a 6637 filter and deleted my AIH, cleaned the intercooler boots and made sure they were secure (no gunk in the tubes), can find no soot indicating any up-pipe leaks, and it's still the same.
I'm not going to do any exhaust upgrade, as I have no confidence that would have any effect if all the other recommendations made no difference.
Oh, and in stock position, temps at wide-open throttle remain below 1200ºF.
I love the performance, but I don't want to toast my turbo.
Any help or recommendations would be helpful; I'd REALLY like to be able to use my DP-Tuner at full-throttle...
I'v had a DP tuner for a few months. Same problems. I shut the tuner off (to stock mode) today with the trailer and floored it to see what the EGTs do...1295-1300 peak. Whats with that? I've always been told stock will never go above 1200 but mine does. Have I also been blissfully ingnorant without guage or is my guage wrong?
Second item, I quit using the Edge Juice with Attitude as a tuner because it kept throwing Check engine codes. However, no also doing it with DP tuner set to 60 tow high alltitude. Anyone else seeing this or do I need to get something else fixed?

At RPM's above 2200, boost climbs to 23 psi, then drops to around 10psi when it shifts.
Max boost at 2000, wot, is 15 psi with the wastegate opening.
Cruising along in OD, if I give some throttle, the boost will only climb to 10ish though the EGT is more than willing to climb.
If I'm not towing, the EGT's are bearable. If I'm towing on a hill (6500 lbs, 10% grade) then it's a silly game of EGT management, even in stock mode.

I would try a down pipe and exhaust if you have not done that it is suppose to lower egts. They claim two hundred to three hundred degrees not sure but mine dont get that hot.

I have the Walker BTM and run the superchips cortex tuner. I don't drive in extreme (80hp+) mode often, but when I do it smokes under full throttle, and I think it's pretty cool . That is what the engine will do when under load with the max tune, there's a lot of diesel fuel going into the engine in those conditions.
As far as EGTs, I would say 75-100 deg F reduction is what I am seeing with the muffler and K&N 'stock' air filter. I drove the grapevine (Los Angeles toward Bakersfield) this summer. My air temp thermometer indicated 102 deg F, I was towing a 20' Grady White boat (5000#) with my wife and two kids and gear for a week in tow safe mode. As one of the other posters said, it was a game of watch the EGTs and adjust throttle accordingly. I am a bit conservative so if I saw EGT over 1100 I'd back off. I never dropped below 60mph and most of the time was 65+/- on the grade as we got a late start so I was trying to make up time. Flat land was 70+ with absolutely no EGT or tranny temp concerns. It seemed that towing with OD off on the steepest parts allowed the engine to breath better and the EGT fluctuations were less extreme. I was also watching the Tranny temp, which was actually a bigger concern for me as typically my EGTs aren't an issue. It was a pretty extreme day as the grapevine is at least a 6% grade for miles and miles and it was really hot (noon time) and I had a full car and medium weight tow. I am happy with my tuner, the guages, the muffler, and I am using the K&N 'stock' filter element. I passed a lot of other vehicles that day that were struggling much harder, not to mention the big rigs.
I think that under some circumstances (like full throttle with high HP tuner) on a grade while towing, the EGTs and tranny temps become an issue no matter what, and that even in stock mode can be. That's my $0.02.
BTW, we had a great time at the California Delta on that trip. Len
