!!!LUGGAGE RACK CAUTION!!!

I HAVE 33K MILES ON MY RIG AND HAVE NEVER MOVED OR EVEN LOOKED AT THE CROSS PIECES OF THE LUGGAGE RACK BEFORE TODAY. MGiles WANTED ME TO MEASURE THE HEIGTH CLEARANCE OF A OEM SPOILER SO I MOVED THE CROSS BAR OF THE RACK BACK TO THE SPOILER TO COMPAIR HEIGTH AND NOTICED WHERE THE RACK HAD BEEN SITTING ALL THIS TIME IT HAS WORN THRU THE PAINT AND IN FACT YOU CAN FEEL A DEPRESSION IN THE METAL WHERE IT WAS SITTING. I LOOKED AT THE REST OF THE CROSS RACKS AND THEY ARE ALL DOING IT. IF YOU DON'T USE YOUR ROOF RACK, TAKE THE CROSSBARS OFF. GOING TO MY DEALER TOMORROW AND SEE WHO IS GOING TO PAINT MY TOP @$#%^&&^%!!!

Re: !!!LUGGAGE RACK CAUTION!!!

I took everything off the first week, just replace the screws. Easier to wash too. If I ever need it I can put it back on in a half hour.

Re: !!!LUGGAGE RACK CAUTION!!!

The factory rack is useless to boot. I ordered my X with the tower rack which is in fact a Yakima rack. I took off the OEM rack the moment I got home with the new rig. The new carrier comes off quickly and does not contact the sheet metal.

Re: !!!LUGGAGE RACK CAUTION!!!

After reading this, I will be removing mine also. Not because of the interference, but because they are always in the way when I wash the top. It never dawned on me before reading this, that I should remove them since I never use them and they are in the way when I was the top.

Furthermore, this is in line with the many news articles that came out when the Excursion was new, proclaiming Ford's desperate attempt to do everything possible to keep the total height of the Excursion to an 'absolute' minimum. Sounds like you (we)are a victim of Ford's 'absolute' minimum.

Re: !!!LUGGAGE RACK CAUTION!!!

My baby also had roof rack scratches after only 7000 miles. Thanks for the original post JD! I caught it before they wore through the clearcoat. I took my X down to the body shop at Ford dealer here in Houston and the manager agreed that the roof rack was a flawed design. He said that he would report it to Ford but it would take 6-8 months before they would be redesigned. He offered to repaint my roof on the spot but I told him that I would see what rubbing compound would do to take the scratches out. It may help speed their redesign if you other guys also show Ford what's happening.

Re: !!!LUGGAGE RACK CAUTION!!!

I Have never put anything in/on my luggage rack. The two center cross bars (held tight with ring bolts) which have a backing that is in constant contact with the roof, had rubbed thru the clearcoat already and was starting to rub thru the paint.

I removed all the cross bars, If I could have gotten a delete option (like Suburban or Yukon XL) I would have! Don't know what you could do to avoid this, but everyone should check. I'm interested if anyone does NOT have the problem.

Re: !!!LUGGAGE RACK CAUTION!!!

AJ'sDAD,

They are the standard Yakima (Ford label) tower mounts that slide into your factory rails and clamp with two bolt clamps per tower. The cross bars are round tubes. I fabricated a 84" x 54" safari basket carrier out of 3/4" square tube stock and expanded metal sheets for the base and mounted it on the carrier with Thule clamp-ons. I can get all the camping gear, extra fuel and spare tire into the basket with room to spare.
