Manual Hubs

There may already have been a post or two about this but just in case...

Last weekend I was reading a post from someone who wanted to buy an X and everyone gave their positive suggestions and what issues they have had with theirs so far. I noticed that one of us had an issue with their manual hubs and they had it repaired by the dealer under warranty. I had a '79 Bronco that had manual Warn hubs and the X is the first truck I have had with push button 4x4; I have used the X's push button 4x4 many times now but the last time I tried the manual way of locking the hubs on the X was when I bought her. What the heck, I decided to try them. Both sides would not turn!! I brought it down to the Dealer and it was fixed under warranty no questions asked. I think they first tried a vacuum test before deciding to replace both hubs. Cool!! Guess I am going to have to check these more often.

Thanks Bruce1954 !!!

-Mike

Need to give mine the "twist" while filling up next time

Re: Manual Hubs

Agree - mine were both replaced under warranty. I had to use pliers to turn them. There are posts on this site which describe how to take the hubs apart and clean, lube and reassemble them again.

I now turn the lever every fuel up, every wash and whenever I think about it and so far, so good.

Re: Manual Hubs

I'm glad you brought this up. When new, mine turned really easy but I haven't checked them since. I'm about to need to fuel up so I guess I'll try the same regiment since I have 15-20 minutes fo fueling time to kill!!

Re: Manual Hubs

I had to free mine up when purchased(used)I srayed silicone spay around the hub then give a couple turns. I'll do this every oil change .It keeps the rubber seal in the hub lubricated. It's been two years now and i'm still free. FJF

Re: Manual Hubs

Great, I just tried mine and they are frozen solid. I was turning them but have not done so in a while. Anyone have the link to the cleaning these things out thread? It has 55k so no warranty.

Re: Manual Hubs

MotionMan, I had mine off when I redid all my front end seals and to my knowledge they can't be completely taken appart.I was only able to get most of the inners out of the hub but then reached a rubber seal ( it seals for the vaccume pump operation) and couldn't go any more into it with out damageing the seal.So i just kept spraying it with silicone spray and moving a little each way intill it would move freely in both directions. And no it is just a mater of maintaining it with a shot of silicone at my oil changes.
