Manual Hubs

Does anyone know what model Warn hubs will fit a 2002 Excursion?

Re: Manual Hubs

What are you trying to do? My factory hubs are frozen and you couldn't move them if you tried, and I did with penatrating oil and working it but it still did not work. Thank goodness for the auto on the dash. I would love to change mine out, I never had problems with WARN on a chevy suburban (90). Someone help us please.

Re: Manual Hubs

Why don't you first take them off, clean them up, out new seals on and give that a try. It is convient to have the auto hubs. The only disadvantage is you can't go into two wheel low.

Some would say that if they fail when you need them you are screwed. But, if you can move them by hand you can lock them in manually so I don't see how you can get stuck. Of course this assumes you can move them by hand. I got a piece of PVC pipe and cut a slot in it to fit over the hub and make it easier to turn. If they don't unlock then just finish the trip and take care of it when you get home. Drivinhg with them locked with the transfer case disengaged won't hurt anything but mpg.

That all said, once my hubs fail to lock in automatically or won't disengaged, then I will put manual hubs on because I want to have two wheel low for backing my trailer.

I know some have said you can make modifications to allow this. I made these mods and it just confued the system and didn't always work right.

Re: Manual Hubs

I can get them to engage with vice grips and it does work out fine for 2wd low. I have had them apart and cleaned them 3 times in 70k. There has to be a better way.

Re: Manual Hubs

I went 4 wheelin yesterday for the first time. I "had" faith in the automatic hubs and installed a enclosed wheel cap for my new rims. The automatic hubs did not lock in and I could not manually do it. This was very aggravating on a vehicle with less than 1k on it...

Re: Manual Hubs

Get used to it. The only way to really know if it is locked is to manually lock it. I have had them apart for cleaning 3 times. That is why I want to install manual Warb hubs.

Motion, hate to tell you this, but if you can't turn your hub locks manually, the dash switch isn't working either. These vacuum operated hubs are notorious for not working. They either lose the vacuum seal or get dirty. In either case, they will not engage. I generally run with my hub manually engaged all winter.

Re: Manual Hubs

The 4 wheel from the dash works ok, I use it quite a bit pulling the boat out in 4 W LO, I have not taken them off and apart, I think they suck and I will find a replacement that is sealed better, I had Warns on a chevy and they never froze up.

Re: Manual Hubs

The part numbers for the Warn hubs that fit the Excursion are as follows:
Standard hub part number: 11690.
Premium hub part number: 38826.

I have put a set of Premium hubs on my 2000 Excursion and have loved every moment. When I first purchased the rig the Ford hubs were very hard to turn and eventually the rubber o-ring pooched out of the front of the hub. After that happened the hubs lost vacuum and did not work. When you install the Warn hubs you have to block off the vacuum lines or when you engage the 4x4 you will loose all vacuum to the rest of the truck (vents, etc...). I took my rig on a bear hunting adventure last week and put it through some very rough terrain climing to the top of a mountain ridge and it performed flawlessly. I recommend the Warn premium hubs on all Excursions and super duty trucks. Hope this helps. Keith

Re: Manual Hubs

do these hubs fit new excursions? Do all excursions have the same front axle? Is it a dana 60 like in the F350?

warn does not list these as for an excursion.....

Re: Manual Hubs

I called Warn before I purchased them for my 2000 X and they could not tell me for sure that they would work on the X. They said that they thought that the front ends were the same as the super dutys. I told them that the X was built on the F250 super duty frame and running gear. They told me to try it and it worked perfectly. The hubs are listed for super dutys from 99-04. I can not say for sure that they will work on 05 or 06 X's but if you have the auto hubs that are held in by the single retaining ring I think that they will fit. The instructions that come with the hubs leave a lot to be desired. When you install the hubs you put the guts in the housing on the 30 spline axel stub, install the o-ring that goes behind the retaining ring, bend the outter tab of the new retaining ring just a little so if you ever need to remove it you can grab it with some pliers and then install it against the o-ring then put the cap on with the 6 bolts provided. It takes about 2 minutes per side, it is very easy. If you have doubt that they will work on your X just pull your hubs out and see if they are only held inplace by the retaining ring. Hope this helps. Keith

Re: Manual Hubs

Mine is a Limited as well and they all have a Dana 60 front end from 99 - 04. I checked out an 05 and a 06 today and they have a new style hub on them, it is the bolt on style.
I purchased them from TennesseeOffRoad.com http://www.tennesseeoffroad.com/cata...roducts_id=679 They sell them for $172.
Tellico4X4.com has them as well http://www.tellico4x4.com/catalog/pr...oducts_id/2095 They sell them for $185.

Re: Manual Hubs

I dont think excursions came with a dana 60 up front. If you look on the sticker on the back of the axle it will say 229 I think, not 248. From what I read, excursions never came with a dana 60 up front, only superdutys (i think duallys) came with 60's, qnd then later I think they changed again and I think all super dutys have a 60 up front, but excursions have a 50...
