Maybe This is Why X Sales Are Down?

Here is an interesting article about people trading in their large trucks for small, fuel-efficient autos.

The small business owner that they highlight traded in 3 full-sized vans for 3 - 4 cylinder Vibes. Saved himself $300 in gas in 2 months. Wowee!!! What an idiot. He spent tons of $$$ to get rid of his vans so that he can save $150 a month in gas. I bet the increase in his car payments was 3-4 times that amount. When this Iraq thing straightens out, and gas drops by $0.50/gallon, his $150/month gas savings will go down to $50/month. But he will still have those bigger car payments.

I saw this in the mid-70s too. People trading in new new cars for smaller ones that got 5 mpg better mileage. Never mind that they lost $5000 trading in the car they just bought, the new one gets 25 mpg!

I hope they keep trading them in. In 2-3-4 years I'll be able to pick up someone's low mile, mint, 2004 Limited 4x4 for about $15,000 as a spare!

If you find some put me down for 2 at that price. I'd put one in mothballs and probably never have to buy another vehicle again.

Have a good one,
Dave

Re: Maybe This is Why X Sales Are Down?

You are right. We had a 78 conversion van and converted it to dual fuel (propane) It dried out the valves and always clogger fuel filters because we ran the gas tank dry and then flipped the switch to propane (you had to be moving over 55). It took the cam out and then we sold it. 70 cents a gallon was nice though.

Remmember in 1973 ? When ford would give you a Pinto if you bought a Lincon Town car. The sales guys were giving nothing for a trade in and then waiting 18 mounths and selling for top dollars.
