Seems to be tons of V10s out there but few diesels. What letter in the VIN indicates a diesel? Some dealers leave diesel out of the description. I am familiar with the powerstrokes but not the Excursion. Currently have a Expedition but looking for better fuel mileage from the diesel, heated seats for the wife, cheaper tires than those 17" on the Exp and possible lowering the monthly payment through better interest rates. Was the 3.73 axle ratio standard on diesels? What was optional for the diesels? I can't believe they have a 44 gal tank!
Thanks
Kelly

when I was looking I noticed that as well, but I'm sure if its a PSD thats a major big plus, and would usually be noted! I found a 01 XLT Premium with 40K miles for $26 very nice with leather and other cool stuff just no wood trim!?

The eighth digit is the engine code. "F" is what you're looking for. I recently acquired an '01 EX. Limited. I believe the 3.73 was standard and yes they do have a 44 gal. tank. Mine does not have heated seats.

I recently made the jump from an Expedition to the X as well. Best thing I ever did...it is much more vehicle and the diesel definitely gets better mileage especially towing. I love the room and the look of it.

Actualy I think the 5.4 get's a 4:10 rear. Of course wiht a 5.4 in an Ex. you need every little bit of help you can get!!

I believe he is talking about the Excursion; I do not believe a Expedition has an option for a diesel engine. (At least not as of now. )

I was too. An Excursion with a 5.4 get's 4:10's I believe, not 3:73's which are standard with the V10 and PSD. Of course I don't know if anyone here cares about an Ex. with a 5.4. That's just crazy (in that SNL Safari guy's best voice )

Thanks for all of your replies. I have seen very few advertised with the 5.4 motor. I have that in my Expedition with 3.73 gears and 17" tires. It shifts out of OD on too many hills in my opinion so I am sure it would be inadequate for an Excursion. My 95 diesel pickup can take any hill empty without dropping any speed and never shift out of OD even with 3.55 gears. I am looking mainly at the Limiteds because of the heated seats were most common on them. Current ratio is about 15 V10s for every diesel. I don't care about the year or miles too much but I don't want a white one which seems to rule out about 1/3 of the diesels. I suppose I am too cheap but I was hoping to get a diesel 4x4 limited for the low $20s with miles under 125000. I doubt if the diesel will pay for itself when all things are considered but I would rather have a higher payment on the loan rather than look at eaking 12 mpg out of it which is what I assume the best all around mileage would be on a V10.
For the guy that jumped from the Exp to the X, are the seats any more comfortable. My wife has a bad back and the seats are very important. Our Exp seats are the leather Eddie Baurer edition with power adjustments.
Thanks for any help or advice you can give
I love these diesels and this forum!
Kelly
PS-Do all diesel X's have cats on them or were there just certain years that has them? Probably a mute question as if it did have one it would get gutted.

Seats - I came from an Expedition. Both set of seats were okay but not the best I have every been it. It took me a little to get the seats adjusted for me. Saying that, I am a big guy that needs some room.
Cat - My Excursion never had a cat. (Except when my daughters brings her inside the Excursion to watch a movie. )
Have a good one,

My Expy seats I thought were pretty comfy...but I do think the X seata are moe comfy. When my brother took a ride in 2000 X for the first time he said it was like sitting in a lazy boy. My wife has not complained after to trips towing the boat! The extra room is great especially if you have kids! Finally, you should be able to find a X Limited in that price range. I bought mine with 78,000 miles on it for $21,900. There are many colored V-10's here in the St. Louis area for $18,000 - $21,000 range...even though I would personally not by an X without the Powerstroke!!
