What the heck is going on?? I have about 2,800 miles on my truck now. It seems that my fuel mileage is on the decline as I get more miles on it. My first fill-up I was getting 15.0 mpg, second tank 15.1 mpg. My last tank resulted in 14.5 mpg and the one before that was 14.6. My computer is now reading 13.9! I always do the calculations when I fill it though). All of this has been with the same driving, basically around town. Up until the last fill-up I had been using Texaco, I got Conoco on the last tank ($1.35 at a reasonably close truck stop). I just changed the oil and used Cheveron Delo 400 (it amazes me how much oil these things hold).
Is this normal? Anything I should check?

I too had decreasing mileage up until about 7K. Went from 15 down to 13. It stayed there until about 10k and went back to about 15. I then got the PPIII and now I am around 17.

I have noticed the same thing. When it starts to break in it seems to rev easier and my foot has a natural tendency to get heavier. Its hard not to enjoy the performance after awhile. Concentrate on backing off. Treat it like the first 500 miles. It will come back. I for one will pay for the extra mile or so per gallon to drive it as intended, HARD.
Thanks for the replies. I probably do have a bit heavier foot. It is always nice to hear others experiencing the same thing. With all the folks posting about mileage increases, I was getting a bit worried.

I Started at 15....pretty much stayed there. I am starting to see an increase. At about 16 now all around driving. Computer is starting to stay at the upper 16 to low 17 range...found this to be about a half mpg off on the high side on a consistant basis. I don't have a real heavy foot either. Something that I think has been helping is I make sure I fill the tank to the rim of the fill tube...no foam...just clear diesel...let it sit for a minute and make sure it doesn't go down. This makes sure I am filling the tank up to the same level everytime and giving me accurate calcs. The only down side to this is it takes about 20 mins to fill it, and with diesel prices at about 1.39 and filling 44 gal. it takes two turns at the pump with the $50 limit that is usually set around here.
Regards,
Paul

John_M, I too started out at 16-17 MPG, dropped to 13.7 highway or city driving; makes no difference - it's stuck at 13.7 MPG now with 7500 mi. on it. I calculated (didn't trust the on board computer)with every fill up (13 so far?), and it tracks within .5 MPG. I have changed the oil every 1500 mi. so far, I do every other oil change and the dealer does the 3000 mi. changes so I have a record (I used to think oil was cheap until I changed this monster at the dealer (oil is $40.65, "KIT-OIL" must be oil filter and new drain plug gasket, and labor is $22.50 for a total of $82.53!). I had it in for the 6000 mi. oil change and service and they investigated my drivability complaint of "stuck at 13.7 MPG"; they checked for any fault codes and then they reset my trip computer... DUH! I specifically stated I calculted my own mileage too! I had a catastrophic failure of my Glow Plug Controller Module at 400 mi., it destroyed both batteries (left work and it was dead - dead in the parking lot, roadside service could not even jump it). My thinking was this event somehow upset the electronics, now I'm not so sure..... I am now interested in chipping it!
I am on my 4th tank of diesel with a low mileage of 15 and a high of 20. The 20 came on a low speed trip of about 200 miles, not level, but only small hills and running 50-55 mph unloaded. At 70-75 unlevel interstate unloaded I got 17.5-18.5 mpg. City driving was right at 15. I have about 2500 miles on the Excursion.
My trip computer is off by about 1 mpg and indicates lower than actual. I have been careful to top the tank slowly each time for accuracy.
I suppose the K&N filter could be making a little difference, but I doubt more than .5 mpg.

I am about to roll 10k on my odometer. When I first got my PSD Excursion, I was running about 13.5 (I have a heavy foot). I got it up to around 15 with about 2500 miles on it. Then I SuperChipped it and now get around 18. I have gotten 20 when I did mostly 65mph driving. Now its mostly 75mph and up.
For instance, my brother borrowed my Excursion this weekend to go to Minnesota. He averaged 18mph and that included the idle time while the nice policeman wrote the speeding ticket for 84.2mph in a 65.
The chip REALLY helped my fuel economy and throttle response. But pre-chip, it exhibited identical fuel economy to what you all have experienced.
Welcome to the site. That will teach your brother not to borrow your excursion!
20 MPH + is fairly easily achievable. Need to open up the air intake, chip, and open up the exhaust. Also need to pay attention to fuel quality/type. I do almost all rural driving at 45-60 MPH and some interstate at 70-75 mph. I am averaging 21 (computer says 24.5 but Hypertech's chip overstates MPGs by between 2.5 and 3.0 MPG).
I have the K&N air filter installed already. I'm going to call HyperTech about their 5" exhaust system pretty soon. Any idea if they make a kit for the Excursions yet?
