Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

Hi, I am new to the "Diesel Thing", and would like some advice. I have a 2001 Excursion Ltd. 4x4 Diesel. I am amazed at all of the upgrade possibilities! I would like to improve the mileage of my Ex... as would everyone else I presume! My question is how far to go with upgrades before it turns to overkill? (if there is such a thing!)
I am looking at swaybars and bilstien shocks, I already put on drilled and slotted brake rotors. I am thinking that I would like to change to a 4" exhaust, an upgraded air intake (but which one?), a Garrett GTP38R turbo, a chip or programmer (again, which one?) and gauges. Keep in mind that I am looking to gain mileage... but I realize that these upgrades will enhance performance as well! Thanks!

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

You have the basics in mind for performance and mileage gains alike, the intake and exhaust will definitely wake it up.

There's plenty to do on the 7.3's

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

Gauges, pyro and turbo. There are many things you can do to obtain your final goal of MILAGE but in my humble rookie opinion, this is is where you may want to start. It sounds like you have read many posts and have an idea of of you final goal and that's cool!! Gauges will help you in achiving this goal and not working against you!!

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

There's tons of posts on this board related to this. I've been interested in the same thing but by far the best upgrade for improving mileage doesn't cost a thing. That is, pretend you've got an egg between your "gas" pedal and your foot. And keep your speed down, anything over 60 MPH will begin to suck down the fuel. And the faster you go will cause fuel consumption to increase exponentially.

My 2001 EX is stock with the exception of the coolant filter and the BFGoodrich AT T/A tires (stock size) and I have an overall rough average of 21 MPG. On the open road at 60 MPH, I get 23-24 MPG. City driving gives me about 18-19 MPG. Cold engines, speed and stop/go driving are the biggest fuel consumers.

And beware of the danger of having all those performance goodies and not being able to keep your food out of it. I know I would succumb!!!

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

I have the same truck and the Superchips Microtuner gets me about 2 - 3 mpg better overall - even with a lead foot. I have detuned it for service and towing frequently enough to know the mileage gains. 13.5 to 14 stock. 15 - 16 mpg with the SCMT.

I think the bigger tires didn't help over the Firerocks, but the Firerocks had to go. I have the gauges trio but I don't see what they have to do with mileage. They are handy when towing. When my trailer brakes seized up, the only warning was the pyro pegging 1000 degrees! Good thing I had my eye on it.

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

I agree, I can get 13.5 to 21 depending on lots of things
However I just put the ford AIS intake on and it looks like a real gain over the AFE I did have in there,
Now is it the intake or the filter???
Who knows but at least .5 MPG may be about 1 MPG

With the cost of fuel that is less than a year pay back and I know the engine is safe and under warranty

Well not for long on the warranty part.

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

My wifes lifted EX got 13ish until I got the Edge Juice and Attitude on it. It jumped to 16.5 MPG after the mod. It is the best of all worlds. More power and better milage.

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

If you want good mileage just keep the speedometer between 40 and 55. Other than that................ good luck!
Now if you want to buy stuff for your truck because you WANT STUFF, then by all means buy it.

Keep in mind stuff costs money. If you spend $1,000 on stuff, that's $1,000 worth of fuel you could have bought. Making up $1,000 in better fuel mileage will be tough to do.

Like I said if it's stuff you want, buy it. If you want to buy it under the guise that you will save money, well..........................

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

My $.04 (2 $.02 comments)

Like Dr.BillZ eluded to. Regaining the costs of mileage altering mods from mileage improvements takes ALOT of miles of driving.

Also, be leary of mileage claims that aren't backed with data. My gut feel for my mileage is always about 2-3mpg more than I actually measure. The overhead displays are no longer accurate once you run a tuner or chip. The size of the tires effects the odometer unless it is compensated. The amount of fuel put in the tank can vary greatly with your patience. The quality of fuel and any additives can alter fuel mileage.

Just some stuff to think about. But if you do discover a great technique for rasing your mileage substantially, let me know !

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

One thing I've found the X does:
When you touch the brakes the transmission seems to go into a "neutral"(the revs go down considerably). If you use that and "coast" the X by light touching the brake you can coax extra miles out of a tank. Why it does this I don't know as it does not assist braking one bit.
Try it. See what it does. It's pretty wierd when you realize what is happening.

Anyone have the part number or will a Ford parts guy know it by name? Also, what does it cost for the Ford AIS intake?

Thanks,

Re: Mileage Upgrades for the Powerstroke Ex

IMHO, the AIS won't be of much MPG benefit unless you push your truck hard on a routine basis. Unloaded, riding up and down the road at 60 MPH and not putting your foot into it, the air intake/boost requirement is minimal, so there wouldn't be any requirement for additional air over what the stock air system provides. This is purely based on my experience with Class 8 trucks and diesel-powered farm equipment. If this isn't the case, please relate your experiences. Thanks.
