Monster Exhaust Going In This Weekend - Any Pitfalls Before I Start?
The system is going this weekend on '00 Ex. It is the new Monster system with the 4in DP and all the way back to the 5in tip !!
Any tips or suggestions specific to Excursion installations that you have run into would be greatly appreciated. I have read a ton of information, but would like X specific stuff. I have help. I have never done exhaust work before, except for installing a muffler found along the freeway during my college years (lean times ).
I will update this thread after my installation experience and also brag about the performance .
Re: Monster Exhaust Going In This Weekend - Any Pitfalls Before I Start?
I've had mine for around a month now and it sounds great. Like a big block gasser. Deep sound but not too loud.
First there is no sheild on the dwn pipe so I had some truck exhaust sheild formed around it and held on with metal binding straps. Didn't feel comfortable with pipe so close to firewall. At the rear axel there is a metal plate that holds the brake line, you will have to bend the top ear closest to the diff so pipe will clear. Next and this is PITA ( GET SOMEONE TO HELP )alien the tailpipe so that it looks correct when exiting the side. Sounds easy but in order to do this you will have to remove the shock. Now before you spend the next 30 mins playing with adjustments sit dwn and have a beverage. Put shock on and then pull pipe back and turn clockwise when looking at rear. PRY BAR PROBABLY REQUIRED. This will have to be done many times so that you are not touching the rear shock. Mine has about 1/4-3/8 " clearance. You will have to heat the rear hanger and bend it in towards the pipe and towards the front of the truck. It holds the pipe and will not allow it to rub or knock against the shock. Unless yours will be easier than mine I would suggest spending the money and watch the two guys curse. If you chose this route make sure you get a firm price before they start. Bet you they underestamate the job.

Thanks for the input. I always like to have have bloody knuckle weekends and wish I had paid someone to do it. I think that is half the fun of the mods.
Re: Monster Exhaust Going In This Weekend - Any Pitfalls Before I Start?
I am interested in the Monster exhaust, but I want absolute plug and play. Why all this heating and bending? Why can't Monster get it right before they sell it to me?
Re: Monster Exhaust Going In This Weekend - Any Pitfalls Before I Start?
jschira,
If you are looking for 'plug and play' and a quality system that sounds good, buy the Magnaflow. No cutting or bending, just bolt it on. Not that much more money either. JS.
Re: Monster Exhaust Going In This Weekend - Any Pitfalls Before I Start?
Didn't have to remove or bend the little heat sheild at front of truck
that attatches to the frame. Didn't say anything about cutting???
The plate that holds the brake cable is soft metal and the ear can be bent with a vise grip. I would think that this would be common for all the exhaust systems as the EX has the bracket and the fuel tank. The trucks do not have the fuel tank in the same position. I am happy
with mine and would imagine that all the others would require the same amount of work to install.

Re: Monster Exhaust Going In This Weekend - Any Pitfalls Before I Start?
Install went smooooth as silk - kind of .
Had some trouble breaking the stock DP away from the turbo connection. I did not want to get carried away with a BFH and break something. I did have a stupid moment when I sliced my index finger as I grabbed the tailpipe end to wessel it around the rearend. Clean cut but not to the bone. Wear gloves!! There is a heat shield just ofter the DP that needs to be removed/modified.
Love the sound of the Monster Exhaust . Went on a road trip to Des Moines yesterday and the X ran cool and quiet. The wife has not driven it yet and she will be able to tell me exactly how quiet (or loud) it is after the mod. As the 2 boys and I know, she can hear everything and never, never ever forgets. If Mama's happy the house is happy and all mod are okay!!!!
Re: Monster Exhaust Going In This Weekend - Any Pitfalls Before I Start?
I was wondering when I saw the "road trip" to Des Moines! If you decide you want another road trip we're having a Midwest Oilburner's Meeting in Joliet this weekend! (always trying to scare up more X's )
Regards,
Dave

Re: Monster Exhaust Going In This Weekend - Any Pitfalls Before I Start?
Thanks for the invite!! Busy this weekend, but it would be worth the drive. No groups have been put together yet in Minnesota so I will keep checking the MOB postings and my free weekends. I need a reason to smell diesel fumes and prove to my wife I am not the "only person doing this to there NEW truck".
