IMHO, I think that buying a Excursion just due to the low financing is the WRONG reason to buy, but to each their own.
Everyone has an opinion, and since you asked, here it is..... The only motor option to get is the 7.3L Turbo Diesel. The engine is not made by FORD, but by Navistar (International). Mileage, I get 20 MPG on the highway as long as I keep the RPM's below 2K. Otherwise, I'm down to 16.5 MPG. With the air on drop another MPG.
This is my first diesel and most likely the first in a long line to come. I'm sold on diesel engines. I just wish more auto makers put them into car.
Regards,
Ben

I have a 2-WD Limited with the V-10, and have been getting 11 -12 in city and 14 - 15 mpg on highway at 70 - 75 mph. Decrease on highway with strong crosswinds. Highway mileage is with 7 people on board, 2 dogs and luggage.
Over 100k miles or so the costs of the V10 and the Diesel will probably be similar. You pay the high cost of the diesel engine and the lower fuel cost or lower cost of V10 and higher fuel costs.
Most of us with diesels buy them for a variety of reasons that may or may not apply to your parents. Sound, smell, towing ability, longevity, fuel mileage - all these are positives for me but some wouldn't like the sound or smell. Also to properly care for the diesel there is a little more routine maintenence and some unique things to learn such as turbo cool down, etc.
I'm no expert here, just learning actually. No regrets here on the diesel option, but I can see where some would prefer the more conventional V10. I made a 2500 mile trip in a Class C motorhome with the same V10 and I was impressed with the engine, although it had to really be wound up for all those hills! I WOULDN'T OPT FOR THE V8. JUST NOT ENOUGH POWER FOR THIS HEAVY RIG.
The Excursion is a great ride! In my case with 5 children, it's nice for each of them to have enough room.
A big decision . . . a big rig!

p.s. I only have about 2500 miles on my Excursion. All my driving has been with a/c on.
I get about 16 mpg mixed driving, 18-20 mpg cruising depending on speed. 20+ at 55-60 mph and 18+ at 70-75 mph.
PDS is the only way to go if you're looking at mileage. The engine will pay for itself (how quickly depends on prices in your area). Combined mileage, including heavy city, I'm getting 16.4. And 18+ on the highway. The truck (and I do mean TRUCK) weighs in at 4 tons with a full tank of diesel and 2 passengers. Mine is a 4x4 LTD with every option, and am happy with the power of the PSD.
