MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

I made a post similar to this on the general forum and received many replies however none of them were from Excursion drivers. What in the heck are you seeing for fuel economy?? Mine is so bad it's pissing me off!! (sorry) I'm getting 12-13 city, 13-14 Highway at 85 and 8-10 while towing an 11,000 lb. travel trailer at 75 mph. This is all in south Florida where there are no hills. People with pickups SAY they are getting 5 mpg more all around than me. What about you guys?????

I also have a lot of goodies that should improve my mpg.......

Re: MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

um those mods (diablo sport)and 36inch tires will lower your mileage plus your truck weighs at least 750lbs more than a pickup

You are getting only 1-2mpg lower than me... but I live at 10k feet

Do you actually think you deserve better mpg at those speeds?

Re: MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

Ok I think I know other than the tires one thing is killing you

SPEED

I know, have the same problem

I can get 12.7 in the winter loaded but no trailer at about 10K+ and some hills driving fast.

I can get 21 OBSERVING THE SPEED LIMIT

Speed will kill your MPGs
Speed while towing will destroy it

I wish some one who drives fast would put on a gear vendors over drive

1795 RPM at 85 sounds perfect to me Like 17 MPG???????????????

See sig for mods

Re: MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

85 in an Excursion I'd only attempt that speed and then some in my Mustang

Around town we get 15-18 and 18-21+ @ 60-71 Mph depending on headwind and grade%

I have my list of mods as well.

Re: MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

Once the engine got broke in (30,000 miles) I have been gotten 19.4 MPG all driving. This is calculated in an excel spread sheet for all fillups.

Slow down to 70 on one road trip and see what it does, your 4X4, lift and big tires are not helping any.

Re: MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

13-14 mpg @85mph isn't far off. On my trips to and from school in Michigan turned out about like that. From Dayton, OH to the Michigan border I would do 65-70mph because the ohio cops are everywhere. I would get at least 18mpg on that part of the trip. As soon as you hit the michigan border going up 23N, the speed limit jumps to 70, but there are hardly ever a cop on that road so 85-90 is the normal flow of traffic. That part of the trip mpg drop like a rock. 13-14 is very normal for that speed. Remember X's are bricks and with your lift and tires you have a larger brick than most.

Re: MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

Dude, unless your 85 years old and can't see that far ahead, 85 mph in anything isn't fast especially if you live in Florida where every road you drive on, you can see the horizon. Hell, the speed limit in some areas is 75. Second, if you own a Mustang and still think 85 is fast, get rid of it. My truck purrrrrs....... at 85. Hell, I still get passed by Semi's!!

I guess my point is, speed is not the problem here. Guys with F250/350's are saying 17 mpg at the same speeds with as many or more mods than me and they live in the hills. 3-4 miles per gallon difference is more than a little. .5-.7 mpg on these diesels is a little.............Everyone I know with 6.0's say my fuel consumption sucks however, I'm the only one with the Excursion. BTW, on my truck, slowing down to 70 only saves .2-.4 mpg depending on the head wind.

Re: MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

Speed is killing you mileage. It takes fuel to run at that speed.

Enjoy the ride but you are going to use a large amount of fuel at that speed.

Re: MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

85 MPH isn't fast until something happens out of your control. I hope you have a good life insurance policy as well as your occupants. I have been sideways (RR tire hypdroplaned)at 50+ MPH in my X and would not like to duplicate it again.
BTW, once I slowed down to 65-70 I gained back 1-2 mpg. In town with 35's and a 100 hp chip I get 16-16.5.

If you still don't think 85 is fast we can set out some obstacles for you in texas to slalom around (ladders, wheel barrows, refridges) so you can practice ONCE!

LOL...that's the truth. You forgot the most important one, the Texas Speed Bump...ARMADILLOS.

Texas does seem to have a lot of road debris. I didn't realize it until I moved back to Houston after living in Los Angeles for 3 years. Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas all have a lot of road debris from some reason.

A local Houston radio station jokingly has a "Road Debris" game when the traffic announcer reports debris in the road. For some reason, mattresses and ladders are always a safe bet! I understand ladders, but mattresses?!?!?!

Re: MPG, Excursion vs. F250/350

I wouldn't necessarily believe everything you hear! Also, common sense should tell you that you are driving an almost 4 ton beast around at higher than normal speeds...and yours has larger tires and some performance enhancements. I can tell a noticeable difference in mpg when driving 55 - 60 mph. compared to 65 - 75mph let alone 85 mph . I understand that general traffic tends to speed thus contributing to your/my delinquency trying to keep up and not get ran over. But, I do not complain to people about what mileage I'm getting when I do this. I avg. about 16 - 17 mpg all around driving for tank of gas (this includes city and highway). I get about 13 mpg towing about 7,000 lbs. of boat and trailer to LOTO where I do go up some pretty serious hills. Mine is pretty much stock for now. If you want good mileage do what I'm told to do any time I complain to people with "normal" size vehicles, "buy something smaller". Just my $0.02...Good Luck!
