MPG and Fuel Additives

2003 Eddie Bauer with 7.3. Getting around town mileage of around 15 -16 and around 18 on the highway. I have seen 20 mpg only once.

Just wanted to know what others are getting and if you're using any fuel additive.

Makes me wonder if I need new injectors. I have approximate 39K miles.

Re: MPG and Fuel Additives

Are you resetting your overhead computer?

Yep, milage seems about the same..

Our mpg average:
15-16.5 city
17-18.5 highway
13.5-15 towing in the hills

On long trips I can get between 19.5 to 20+ mpg on the highway but it takes some work.

I use Stanadyne PF, seems to work, only time will tell.

Re: MPG and Fuel Additives

I've got close to 70K on my 2001 PSD 4x4 Excursion. Since it was purchased, I've averaged 19 MPG overall. Recently I've slowed it down 5 MPH and drive like I've got an egg under my foot. No more jackrabbit starts or long idle periods. I consolidate my trips and try to avoid short trips when the engine is cold which drags down a good MPG average. Results are 21 MPG average which I'm very happy with. And that's in very mixed driving from wide open to bumper-to-bumper. I commute 100 miles a day and my fuel bill is about $50 per week.

Re: MPG and Fuel Additives

I went from 15 average to over 18 when I got the Edge juice/Attitude combo. That is with GPS and fill up calculations. Mind you that is with 35 inch BFG Mudders. Very happy with that combo.

Re: MPG and Fuel Additives

My overhead computer says something like 20-24mpg most of the time, which is not even remotely correct. The previous owner of the truck tells me that before the programmer was used, the overhead was sorta-accurate.

Driving to and from work, I get 16.0-16.5mpg in the winter and 16.5-17.0 in the summer. I'm assuming the difference between winter and summer is due to the winter-blend thing (my understanding is that diesel #1 is mixed with diesel #2 in the colder months to help prevent fuel gelling). I get about 18ish on long highway trips.

It seems like maybe I get slightly better mileage when using powerservice - maybe 0 - 0.5MPG/tank. Hard to say for sure though.

I can tell you that my mileage does improve noticably after getting speeding tickets (I drive slower for a while). That's about the only thing I've seen that has a direct/significant impact on mileage. There may be something out there that has a big impact on mileage, other than your foot, but I haven't seen it yet.

If you find anything, please let me know.

Re: MPG and Fuel Additives

After all the mods and such, I get about 16 city and on the long cross country hauls from Sacramento to Iowa and back I average about 18 going 75-80 mph. Not bad. I use to have the AFE filter and switched to the AIS Ford heavy duty filter and had no difference in mileage. If I can keep my foot out of it and keep it under 70 I can get 21...but who wants to go 70 in the Nevada desert. This X is so much fun to drive!

Re: MPG and Fuel Additives

I just did the math going back to when it was new.

Upper comp says higher milage but differances with changes made are about the same.

All these are hand calculated. I travel almost no city stop and go. Mostly trips 100 mile + each way and either interstate of 4 lane where speed limit is around 65 mph.

My average speed I drive is 70 +. I drive it like a small car and am not very good with slow startups. Milages include about the same amount of towing and cargo loads.

From 12 miles through 20,876 all stock. 11.65 mpg.
(overhead comp 14.2)
from 27513 through 37268 with Super chip (various modes.) 13.396 mpg.
(overhead comp 15.8)

no additives.

Hope this helps.
