MPG help only getting 10.9 after 682 miles

It all start Friday evening on 3-24 with a great EX in my drive way. For a first time owner of a FORD. After 76 GMC/CHEVs I love my new PSD.

Quick ? after 682 miles to my suprise it looks like the mpg is around 10.9

Please sound off on any info as to the mpg from the start of this great Ex,PSD.

I taked to DSI and they said this is low mpg.
What should I or have others seen at this stage of the game. Great web site. Because of this site I bought the EX. The GMC site sound really bad about all the problems with the new truck.

Re: MPG help only getting 10.9 after 682 miles

bengal,

During break-in, it is not uncommon for the mileage to start low and gradually rise. My X started at about 9 mpg and rose to over 20 mpg.

The break-in technique is important to the fuel efficiency the engine will see later in its service life. I would urge you to spend some time in the archives looking under "breakin" or possibly "nickel" or possibly "alloy" to find a great thread that describes the PSD's technical features and how to properly break it in. The upshot is that the PSD can take up to thirty thousand miles to breakin and fuel economy will continue to rise very gradually during that period.

A warm welcome to the site and this forum!

Re: MPG help only getting 10.9 after 682 miles

Hi Bengal,

Polar Bear said it good. Break in on a diesel does take quite a bit longer than on a gasser. The mileage will get a good bit better, but if it does not camp out at your dealer.

I also want to welcome you to the forum and the X crowd . Enjoy the forum as most of us do. Jump around to other sections and you will learn a great deal about the operation of your tank and have some fun and thought provoking experiences.

Take care

Re: MPG help only getting 10.9 after 682 miles

Bengal,

Welcome to the forum.

We had a 99 EB Expedition 4x4 (5.4L gas) that would get between 11 to 12.5 on a mix of city/highway. (depends on whom was driving).

We averaged around 13.5 mpg on the same route with the first two tanks of diesel fuel with the X. I figure that is not bad considering it weighs almost a ton more than the Expy.

I have read and heard from other PSD owners saying if fuel economy is important to you, then you should consider the following tips:

1. Buy your fuel at a truck stop or station that sells a lot of diesel. (Fresher fuel, less likely to have stale or water in it)
2. On acceleration, don't let the engine up-shift much past 2000 rpm
3. Stay out of the turbo (yeah right )
4. Keep the cruising rpms no higher than 2000 rpms. Your best mileage will be between 1600-1800 rpm because this is in the peak torque curve.

This past week end I towed my 27' travel trailer (7,000 lbs.) to Illinois and back. My fuel mileage was 13.6 at 60 mph (1700 rpm) and 11.6 at 68 mph (2000 rpm). I was real pleased with the numbers on that pull. After the trip the X has 2,100 miles on her.

Re: MPG help only getting 10.9 after 682 miles

I've gotten 15-18 mpg since day one. Closer to 15 mpg city and closer to 18 mpg highway. I get 12-13 mpg towing 5000 lbs. at 65 mph.

H ED S - You know the 3.73 ratio rear is the only one available with the Power Stroke.

Re: MPG help only getting 10.9 after 682 miles

I have the 4:11's and I can get pretty decent mileage if i could just control the right appendage. But that is a little hard because I think I have a defect in that darn pedal. Well enjoy that new truck.

Re: MPG help only getting 10.9 after 682 miles

Bengal You did not say if you had 2 0r 4 wheel drive and if you have 3.73 or 4.11 differential gearing. These items wil make a difference in mileage also.

Have you got that ear to ear big off your face yet???
